All Jace Anderson could feel was embarrassment.

His shirt was almost falling off because gods those nymphs were—!

No. No one needs to know all of what the nymphs had said. But they were indeed very ferocious kissers. Jace felt like he'd gotten all the kissing practice anyone could ever need. His hair was greasy as fuck and so were his hands from pulling it back. The veins on his arms were building out from lugging the heavy sheet of metal and that made the dumb things Hazel had written on his arms stand out.

Hazel and Leo stumbled through the door with Jace behind them (why was he always behind people?).

"Gods of Olympus." Piper stared at Leo before zoning in on Jace and his even worse for wear appearance. "What happened to you?"

"Ask Leo." When Piper looked at the short boy Leo scratched the back of his neck.

"Long story," he said. "Others back?"

"Not yet," Piper said.

Leo cursed. Then he noticed Jason sitting up, and his face brightened. "Hey, man! Glad you're better. I'll be in the engine room." He ran off with the sheet of bronze and left Jace standing awkwardly without anything to hold, oh, and Hazel also stayed in the doorway. Jace wanted to leave the ship and jump into the waters. He didn't want Jason seeing him when he looked like he came out of someone's worst nightmare.

Piper raised an eyebrow at Hazel. "Team Leo?"

"We met Narcissus," Hazel said, which didn't really explain much. "Also Nemesis, the revenge goddess." Jason sighed.

"I miss all the fun."

"Trust me, it wasn't fun."

"Jace!" Jason apparently hadn't noticed him standing in the doorway until he spoke. Jace felt his cheeks warming up slightly but he wasn't worried about it shoving. His face was already red from running from the nymphs.

"Hi... Glad you're awake." Jace knew he sounded off but he was glad no one pointed it out. He just wanted to leave and clean up himself from Leo's horrid plan.

"Y-yeah." Jason stuttered. Why did he stutter? He most likely wasn't expecting Jace to look the way he did.

On the deck above, something went THUMP, as if a heavy creature had landed. Annabeth and Percy came running down the hall. Percy was toting a steaming five-gallon plastic bucket that smelled horrible (not surprising). Annabeth had a patch of black sticky stuff in her hair (she looked as bad as she normally did). Percy's shirt was covered in it (loser).

Why was Jace being so aggressive? He didn't even know the answer.

"Roofing tar?" Piper guessed. Frank stumbled up behind them, which made the hallway pretty jam-packed with demigods. Frank had a big smear of the black sludge down his face that, in Jace's opinion, looked like a weird kind of war paint.

"Ran into some tar monsters," Annabeth said. "Hey, Jason, glad you're awake. Hazel, where's Leo?" She pointed down.

"Engine room."

"Jace what happened to you?" Okay, why did Annie have to bring up his appearance? That was very unnecessary and also really not needed.

"Nothing—"

Suddenly the entire ship listed to port. The demigods stumbled. Percy almost spilled his bucket of tar. "Uh, what was that?" he demanded.

"Oh..." Hazel looked embarrassed. "We may have angered the nymphs who live in this lake. Like...all of them."
