Unfortunately Jace didn't die. But Percy almost did.
And gods be damned at how disappointed Jace was when he realized Percy was still breathing.
Jason and Percy had charged each other, but Tempest and Blackjack balked long enough for Piper and Jace to leap out of the way(Piper mostly just pulled him along with her). They rolled to the edge of the road and looked back, dazed as the boys crossed swords, gold against bronze. Sparks flew. Their blades blurred—strike and parry—and the pavement trembled.
Jace tightened his grip on his spear and rushed forward to parry a hit Percy aimed at Jason. He knew he couldn't hurt Percy just yet, he had meant to bring him back alive to Annie. Jace hit Percy's torso with the stick part (he didn't know the terms— nor did he care) and pushed the boy back slightly before getting hit by a sword from the back.
Jace felt something warm trickle down his back and quickly turned around just in time to crouch down and dodge a strike from Jason. The guy was not messing around, he was intending to kill. The gold eyes were also very unsettling but gave a kind of comfort of knowing that something was not right. Most likely Geae's doing. Something was controlling the two.
He blocked a hit with the stick part and swiped at Jason's feet. He jumped over it. Fuck.
Jace should fall back. But he didn't, or he would get stabbed by the one guy he had gotten the most familiar with on the ship (except Annie— but she wasn't there so it didn't matter) and he really didn't want that. Jace heard hooves clomping onto the ground but he couldn't focus on it. The horses were doing something. He just had to avoid and hope that neither of them would hit him.
"Stop it!" Piper yelled. For a moment, Jason heeded her voice. His golden eyes turned toward her, and Percy charged, slamming his blade into Jason. Jace hated that the charmspeak worked on him as well. If it hadn't, he wouldn't have gotten thrown onto the ground by Percy. He was going to beat the shit out of him once the guy was back on track.
Thank the gods, Percy turned his sword—maybe on purpose, maybe accidentally—so the flat of it hit Jason's chest; but the impact was still enough to knock Jason to his arms and knees. Blackjack cantered away as Tempest reared in confusion. Was the horse still there? Jace thought it would've ran away already.
The spirit horse charged into the sunflowers and dissipated into vapor.
Got it right.
Percy struggled to turn his pegasus around. "Percy!" Piper yelled. "Jason's your friend. Drop your weapon!" Percy's sword arm dipped. Piper might have been able to bring him under control, but unfortunately Jason got to his feet. Jason roared. A bolt of lightning arced out of the clear blue sky. It ricocheted off his gladius and blasted Percy off his feet.
Sorry Jason, Jace thought. He charged at Jason's torso and knocked him down. Sorry again.
Blackjack whinnied and fled into the wheat fields. Jason(after getting back up) charged at Percy, who was now on his back, his clothes smoking from the lightning blast. Jace looked at Piper to see if she was still okay and hadn't magically disappeared. He couldn't hear what Gaea was saying ot her but it couldn't have been good since she screamed, "No!" very loudly.
"Jason, stop!" said boy froze, his sword six inches from Percy's face. You know what else is six inches? The distance that held Jace from his happiness— maybe add a couple more to that so the blade would go all the way through.
Jason turned, the gold light in his eyes flickering uncertainly. "I cannot stop. One must die." Something about that voice...it wasn't Gaea. It wasn't Jason. Whoever it was spoke haltingly, as if English was its second language.
