You were busy picking flowers as you watched the sun go by, clouds dotting the sky.
Today was your birthday, and you were turning 20 officially. Your mother had invited everyone she knew to come, as she always made birthdays and other holidays over the top. You only knew about half the people coming. Everyone else you didn't know or your mother didn't tell. There wasn't much to do, as your mother said she'll handle everything with your older sisters help, wanting you to relax fully and really enjoy the day for once in the year. It was your special day after all.You weren't especially happy with a lot of people coming, as you hated interacting with anyone you didn't know, and hated socializing. Plus, your mother would probably be seeing if one of the many men she would undoubtedly invite would make you fall in love with them at first sight, and you'd finally marry. You sighed as you recalled your mother attempting to matchmake you with a son from a rich household many times in the past. Of course, it did not go well. You refused, and the men never took interest in your quiet demeanor and ignorance at them.
You spotted a beautiful red flower, and you smiled softly. It brought you out of your thoughts for a moment as you stood up to walk toward the flower to grab it. "My sister will love this flower." You thought, approaching the plant.
Someone beat you to it, though. He picked the flower out, admiring it. The man had yellow hair with red tips, that reminded you of flames. He wore a matching haori, and there was a grin plastered on his face. He seemed quite handsome. He then noticed you and smiled wider.
"Why hello there! Who might you be? My name is Kyojuro Rengoku!" He said, much louder than you'd expect. "Oh, my name is L/N Y/N." You mumbled softly while holding a small smile. You were very quiet and timid around those you did not know. "Could you repeat that a bit louder ma'am?" He asked, his voice booming, though his smile never wavered.
"Oh, sorry. My name is L/N Y/N!" You said, trying to speak much louder. He nodded, seeming to have heard you this time. "Nice to meet you L/N! Did you want this flower?" He said, outstretching his arm toward you that held the flower. You nodded, smiling a bit wider.
"Oh, yes. I was going to get it for my older sister, but you can have it." You said, making no move to grab the flower. He tilted his head. "Are you sure? You may have it if you want!" He yelled, still holding out the flower to you. You admired his kindness and finally nodded. "If you do not want it, then I can use it." You said, taking the flower.Though, he withdrew his hand, and took a few steps closer. He put the flower in your hair, and grinned bigger. "You look very beautiful with that flower in your hair L/N! It suits you!" You blinked in surprise and giggled. Perhaps he hadn't heard you say it was for your sister. You didn't mind though, as the rest of the flowers would probably be for her or for decoration.
"What brings you here Rengoku San? I don't think I have ever seen you in this small town before." You asked, looking at him with curiosity. The village you live in wasn't very small but not large enough where everyone didn't know everyone. You had never seen this man before in your life, and so you thought he might have been visiting someone here."Oh! I have come here to slay a demon! I am a demon slayer, and there are rumors a powerful demon may lurk here! That said, you must return home soon, the sun is beginning to set!" Your eyes widened. You knew demons did exist - your father had been killed by one - but you didn't think another demon would be in the area again.
"May I accompany you back? It is very dangerous for you to walk back home when there is a demon around." Rengoku offered. You nodded, a small smile on your face. You trusted this man, he seemed quite friendly. Plus, you didn't know how to defend yourself from a demon, so having him around would be helpful. The two of you stood up as Rengoku let you lead the way to your home. It was a little far, but not too long. Soon, the sun had already set, and the moon was high in the sky. You two were the only ones out at night now.
You enjoyed Rengoku's company, talking about all sorts of things. When you neared your home, you felt a little sad knowing that the conversation was going to come to an end. "Well, I guess this is goodbye, Rengoku-San. I admit, I rather enjoyed your company. Do you think you could visit from time to time?" You asked, your home visible. Rengoku nodded, his smile growing wider. "Of course Y/N San! I would love to talk with you more!" He yelled, happiness in his voice. You smiled almost as wide, your eyes closed.
That might have been the reason why you both didn't notice a demon sneaking up on you. Perhaps Rengoku was distracted. His eyes suddenly widened as he noticed a demon, but before he could act, the demon appeared. It grabbed you and carried you off, trying to get away from the slayer. You screamed loudly as a pair of arms with sharp claws gripped you tightly, hard enough to cause a bruise.
"Yum, my meal looks especially beautiful and delicious!" It growled, a long purple tongue slithering out from under its sharp jaws. It had short black hair, cracked yellow skin, and bloodshot red eyes. It looked as scary as the first demon you ever saw, and you trembled with fear.
"Release this innocent young woman at once!" Rengoku yelled, trying to get you out of the demon's grasp. He couldn't kill the demon without hurting you, so he tried to get you away from the demon. The demon seemed to realize this, as it carried you tightly and refused to let you go, even though you attempted to break free of its tight hold.Suddenly, the three of you arrived at a cliff. The demon was shocked, and got a bit fearful. Slowly, Rengoku approached the demon and you. "Let the girl go." He said, raising his sword. The demon looked around, but slowly got an idea. He grinned wickedly, and set you down, clamping his hold over your wrists. He lifted you up and you struggled as he held you over the cliff. Your eyes widened in fear as you shrieked, seeing how high you were, and how if you were let go, there no doubt you would die.
"If you get any closer or try to kill me, I'll drop this pretty girl and she'll fall to her death. I suggest you start backing up." The demon said, looking at Rengoku dead in the eye as you hovered past the edge. You let out another loud shriek, as you had a huge fear of heights, and desperately did not want to fall. You tried getting closer to the cliff ground or cling to something, but to no avail.
"What's it gonna be, hashira?" The demon said in its low raspy voice. Rengoku's gaze hardened as he tried to come up with a plan. He could easily slice the demons head off, though he could injure you, but you would fall to your death, as you couldn't hold on to anything else. With no other choice, Rengoku was forced to back up. "I'm sorry, Miss Y/N, just stay calm!" He said, attempting to reassure you. You nodded, closing your eyes to ignore the looming distance between the ground and you. Rengoku back up, disappearing into the bushes.
After a few minutes of silence, the demon grinned wickedly and dropped you on the floor with a loud thud. You shrieked, as you fell onto your side. "Now, I can finally eat my meal in peace!" The demon cackled, taking a few steps toward you.
You screamed for help, closing your eyes. "Is this really how I'll leave this world? I didn't even get to say goodbye to my family..." you thought, tears streaming down your cheeks.
Suddenly, bright flames burst from the bushes, and Rengoku appeared, irk lines across his face.
He sliced the demons head off, who was too shocked and too busy focusing on you that he couldn't defend himself. His head fell to the floor, rolling toward the cliff.
"I can't believe you. You nasty demon slayer, you stole my lunch. You little b-" before it could utter another word, its head rolled off the cliff. It disintegrated into ash before it reached the floor, along with his body.
You both breathed a sigh of relief, thankful that the danger is gone. "Thank you so much Kyojuro-San. I am forever in your debt for saving my life." You said, standing up and bowing to him. Your bow was a little sloppy, as you were shaking still from some leftover fear and adrenaline.
His wide grin returned, causing your cheeks to heat up. "No worries ma'am! This is my job, and I'm happy I could keep you safe! Now, let's go back to your home." He said, turning around. You nodded, and smiled softly.
You wouldn't mind seeing this man again, that's for sure.
