The angst version of the last chapter, hope you enjoy! I'm not the best at writing angst (unless I watched a sad movie and started sobbing 😭 but here it is) WARNING ⚠️: Some swearing
This morning you woke up very cheerful and energetic. Yesterday Kanae was assigned a strong demon, but she would have the next two days off, so you could both grow her and your garden. You had already harvested the turnips, and Kanae's garden was beginning to grow. You both were proud of each other's hard work, and couldn't wait to use it to make delicious food.
Still, you couldn't wait to see your beloved girlfriend again. Yes, she was now your girlfriend. After that kiss a few months ago, you had asked for her and her sister Shinobu's permission to date Kanae. Obviously Kanae accepted, very red faced, but Shinobu was ready to beat you, threatening you once more what she would do to you if you broke her older sister's heart.
Though, the weather today wasn't very pleasant for you and Kanae to work on your gardens. It was raining pretty hard. 'That's a shame,' you thought to yourself. 'Maybe me and Kanae could just relax and read today. Or cook. We might have some food somewhere.'
Since you didn't have your own estate because you weren't a hashira, Kanae insisted you move in with her, which you thought was too generous. But Kanae wouldn't hear it, and gladly let you stay at the Butterfly Mansion, living with her sister Shinobu and their adopted sister Kanao, which you sometimes read with. If her coin flipped yes, of course, which was often. That said, you stepped out of your shared room with Kanae and walked down the hall.
You didn't see anyone running around in a hurry, which was quite odd. Usually you would see or hear Aoi or Shinobu at this time. But instead, it was deathly silent. Even as you approached the kitchen, which was usually swarming with food and people running around, there wasn't a soul to be seen.
You felt something was quite wrong, and started looking for the others. "Kanae-Sama? Shinobu-San? Aoi-Chan, Kanao-Chan, are you there?" You called, walking around the massive estate. You went to the infirmary rooms, seeing only one patient, who seemed to be sleeping.
"Could you keep it down there, I'm trying to sleep!" The boy said, quite angrily. He had black hair with green tips, and light hazel eyes. Your eyes widened with shock. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to disturb you! Do you by any chance know where Kocho Kanae or Kocho Shinobu is?" You asked.
The boys eyes widened and tears immediately fell down his face. "K-Kocho Kanae?" The boy said, turning his gaze away from you to the window. He seemed traumatized, even though a few moments ago he was fine and telling you to shut up.
You gaze at his body and notice a cast over his left arm, and see a few scratches and bruises on his face, arms and legs. "W-where you the one that accompanied Kanae-Sama to her mission?" You said, your voice cracking. Judging by the state of his condition, the battle could not have been good. He was the Kinoe that joined Kanae in her mission (in the manga I think Kanae went alone but in this one shot she was accompanied by a Kinoe slayer). "Yes. I am Yoshito. And..." the boy trailed off. What h-happened to her?" You continued, your mind racing to fears over what might have happened on the mission and why everyone was gone. The boy shook his head.
"She-she saved my life. T-they're waiting outside for you, y'know. To..." the boy began crying once more. His cocky attitude was instantly gone. Without another moment, you ran out of the room, tears spilling from your eyes. 'N-no, everything is fine, it has to be. P-perhaps it is all a prank. Please, not my sweet Kanae.' You thought, running as fast as you could outside. Your mind flashed to a few days ago, before Kanae's mission.
"Are you sure you're going to be alright? I heard this demon might be strong, and usually you don't go with other slayers to help you." You said, worry on your face. You were always nervous whenever Kanae had to leave for a mission, but this time she would have someone else join her, which was unusual. Plus, everyone who went to the Eternal Paradise Cult never returned. "Don't worry Y/N-San, I'm sure I'll be fine. Are you sure you aren't a little jealous?" She asked, playfully teasing you. Your eyes widened with shock and embarrassment as your face turned beet red. "N-no! I'm just worried for you t-that's all! Plus, I'm not going to be here tomorrow because of my mission, so who will water the garden?" You pointed out, looking away from her. Kanae giggled and placed a hand on your shoulder. This only caused you to go even more red. "I'll be fine, I'm sure of it! Plus, after our missions, we'll have lots of time to spend with each other and taking care of the gardens. And I'm sure Shinobu-San, Kanao-Chan or Aoi-Chan could look after the gardens. There's nothing to worry about my love. I'll see you soon, I'm sure of it!"
You finally made it outside, not even trying to hide your tears. Outside, Shinobu seemed to be waiting for you. When she turned toward you, you saw she looked deeply traumatized and her eyes were puffy and red, with more tears still spilling from her eyes. But you noticed she was carrying Kanae's distinctive haori, which she always wore. "Shinobu-San, please tell me Kanae-Sama is alright?" You asked her, hoping it was all a hoax.
Shinobu mustered up the smallest smile in an attempt to restrain herself before bursting into a sob. She ran toward you and gripped you tight. "She, she fought Uppermoon 2. A-and she couldn't save herself. Onee-San is dead and it's not fair and-and-" Shinobu started rambling about everything as she wailed in your arms. Now that the truth was confirmed, you started sobbing as loudly as Shinobu.
Soon, you felt others join your hug, seeing Aoi with tears in her eyes and Kanao, who was deathly silent and had no expression, but you knew she was deeply scarred by her adopted sister's death. You all cried for the loss of Kanae, and you cursed at the Uppermoon who stole the love of your life from you. "I swear Kanae-Sama, I'll get revenge for you."
A few years later...
You and Shinobu both shared the goal of defeating the Uppermoon who ended the life of Kanae, and while Shinobu became the new pillar and developed poisons, you would disappear for weeks on end, defeating as many demons as you could and interrogate them about Uppermoon 2 to see if you could find The Eternal Paradise Cult, where the coward hid.
Your personality had changed completely, from being gentle and kind-hearted to cold and rude to anyone who wasn't the master, Shinobu, Aoi, and Kanao.
Though, you always made time to take care of the garden that you and Kanae made. Including the pretty pink flowers you had gifted to Kanae so long ago. But instead of putting them in her hair like before, you would make a bouquet with sometimes Shinobu or Kanao or Aoi helping, and left it at her grave. She had always liked those pink flowers, and so you always left them for her to enjoy.
Today, it was raining once more. You had been walking for quite some time until you arrived at the stone marker that Kanae was buried at. You set the flowers against the gravestone, as rain soaked you and your haori. You thought of all of your memories with Kanae-San, and how short they all were. 'If not for that b@stard demon, Kanae would have been alive. I might have married her, grown old with her.' You were interrupted from your thoughts with a few people approaching you.
Shinobu, Kanao, and Aoi were here. They also carried bouquets of the same or similar pink flowers as yours. Without another word, they each set it down next to yours. You all stood there for a few moments, mourning Kanae silently before you all left
'I'll always love you Kanae, whether you are here on earth or up in heaven.'
The end 🌹🌸
