Light choked, tasting blood and gravel. Each rasping breath sent another jolt of agony through his ribs. His vision swam, the faces above him blurring into grotesque masks of laughter and hate. Their kicks landed with rhythmic cruelty, each one chipping away at the already thin line between consciousness and oblivion.

"Die, freak!" snarled a voice, thick with spittle and venom.

Light wanted to defy them, to scream and spit the defiance that burned in his throat. But his voice was lost, buried beneath the weight of their boots and the relentless pounding of his own fading pulse.

Then, darkness. An inky void devoid of pain, fear, or even thought.

He awoke to the caress of cool earth against his cheek. The stench of pine and damp soil replaced the metallic tang of blood. Groaning, he tried to open his eyes, but his eyelids felt glued shut. A soft giggle startled him.

"Awake, sleeping beauty?"

He forced his eyes open, squinting against the dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves above. A woman knelt beside him, her smile both playful and strangely knowing. Her dark hair cascaded down her back, framing eyes that shone with an almost unnatural vibrancy.
