As I kept walking down the street, remembering what had happened in the detention class.I jumped when my phone started to ring. The screen said “Louis”. I hesitated before answering the phone.
“What?” I said quietly, still walking. “Look, I'm sorry for what happened back at school,” Louis said in an apologetic tone. “I know you are sorry, but Louis… Why did you attack that kid? I know he attacked first but why?” I asked softly, questions running through my mind. “He just randomly jumped at me, and I just… I don't know,” She whispered before hanging up. I sighed and continued my walk home, thinking about what she said. The sight of my brother's car in the driveway brings a bit of joy to this terrible day. He is probably back from vacation in Texas, visiting my mom.
As I walked through the door my brothers ran up to me and rubbed my head making my hair a mess. “Hey! What was that for!?” I said loudly, annoyed that my hair is now a mess. I walked past him and stomped upstairs not saying anything. I get to the attic door, and pull the ladder down. After climbing the ladder to my room I flop on my bed with a sigh. “Another day of school… 200 more days to go.” I hear my attic ladder creak. My brother popped his head in, Walking up the ladder to hand me something. “Hey some blonde with glasses and a blue sweater dropped off a love note for you.” I look up from my pillow with a groan as I snatch the letter and start ripping it up. The ripped up pieces of the note slip out of my hand and into the trash can. I turn over in bed, staring at the boring pale gray wall. The door to the attic slams shut as my eyes slowly flicker close, hoping tomorrow will be a better day.
I wake up still looking at the wall, but today seems like a good day. I got ready like normal, as today I didn’t sleep in. But as I was grabbing my uniform a jolt of pain ran through my body. “What the heck!?” I yelled, gripping my side and shutting my eyes, hoping the pain would go away. The pain continues and doesn't stop, I just get so tired of it… “AAAAAAAAA!” I scream. My brother barges in wondering what happened, this look of fear and terror in his eyes. “Wh...what happened!?” He said with a tone in his voice, like I just screamed so loud the entire county could hear me. I look at him still holding my side, and in an instant he knows what’s happening is unlike me. He runs downstairs grabbing every blanket and heating pad. The sounds of running up and down the stairs and running around the house echoing throughout the walls. I look at him as he climbs back up the ladder, but now the pain is gone. “I feel better now,” I say to him with a shrug as he looks at me like I'm crazy. His big blue eyes were as wide as a moon and his curly blonde hair was all over the place.
I continued the day as nothing happened and so did he.
I walked to school as normal and when I got there I was greeted by… “Hey Ares!” Louis ran up to me with a big smirk. “Now what?” I grumbled in a low tone, while walking towards the school. “Oh nothing...” She smiled at the sky, closing her eyes. “Otherwise then tree planting day!” Louis says with a big smile, because today is one of the only school days where we waste it outside. I stopped and looked at her, blinking slowly as I turned around starting to head home. “Wait, where are you going?!” Louis yelled, running after me. “Well if we aren’t doing any work today, what's the point of going to school? You know I hate digging holes and putting trees in them.” Louis stopped smiling but rolled her eyes. “I know that silly!'' Louis said to me, putting a hand on my shoulder. I looked back at her, giving her the death glare. Knowing that I will be in deep trouble by even missing an hour of school, I turn back around to continue the walk to school.
I put my bags in my locker like usual, then to see another love note with the same handwriting. Grab it, rip it up, and put it in the trash like the other one. Waste of time to read something dumb and stupid, it's probably just a prank like anyone would have a crush on me. I'm a misfit. I arrive in the classroom, to everyone about to get on the bus to go to the field where we plant trees.
After the long ride, with people screaming and just being annoying. It felt like 3 hours, but it was probably about a 30 minutes drive to get there. When we finally arrived I got handed a shovel, a clear garbage bag full of saplings, and some gardening gloves. I get put in a row all the way on the left side of the field. Click, clack, click, clack, the digging has begun. I start digging and planting trees, while the blazing sun watches over me. I'm three holes down and CLUNK. I hit something, but what?
