Weeks later Miranda woke up and got dressed and set out on her day with a goal in mind. She saw her husband off to work and her kids off to school. She then made her way to GreySloan with a plan. She walked in excited for her plan. She walked past Meredith, Maggie, and Nick. All of them were clearly surprised to see her.
"Wow. What are you doing here?" Meredith asked
"None of your business. I'm a private citizen." Miranda kept walking until she reached the intern locker room. She introduced herself to the interns and she thought back to meeting her own interns for the first time. She thought about her own intern year.
She and Wilson had big plans and she was excited to get started, especially since she would also be getting to work with one of her favorite doctors. Dr.Addison Montgomery. She enjoyed spending time at home with her family but she recognized that there was work to be done and she was prepared to head back to work and join the fight. So she, Wilson, and Addie formed the sexual education dream team. Despite the interns groaning she was excited for this project.
As the day went on the sexual education plan was a bust. The interns hated it and the kids were obviously bored. Miranda and Jo stood by their curriculum and knew these kids needed to learn. It was for their own good. Their day was interrupted by a young girl who needed immediate surgery. Miranda was ready to jump right in. Dr.Deluca was unavailable but luckily for them, Addison was in the hospital. She told Wilson to page Addie and she'd need privileges. Completely forgetting for a moment that she technically no longer worked there so she would need privileges to even step foot in the OR. She felt the adrenaline through her veins and was set to go.
"So are you" Wilson commented. Reminding her that she would also need privileges.
The realization hit Miranda. She did walk out of this hospital 6 months ago and didn't look back. She was no longer a surgeon at GreySloan Memorial. She went from running this hospital to having to ask if could she do surgery in the hospital. She sighed and went to find Richard. She would rather eat a bowl of nails than have to ask Meredith directly.
Richard found humor in Miranda having to ask for privileges. He was excited for her to be back in the hospital. He had waited for her to cut that stay-at-home mom charade out and get back to being a surgeon. Hearing her ask to perform surgery was like music to his ears. He granted her privileges.
In the surgery, Miranda, Jo, and Addie talked about their feelings. When Addie mentioned going to a rage room. Miranda thought about the day she had with her boys. The sound of their yells, laughter, and things breaking all around them. And how it still wasn't enough to calm the fire of her rage. After the surgery, Miranda and Jo returned to their sex ed lesson shocked to discover things had gone wayy off script and yet it seemed the teens were learning something. Not quite sure of what they were learning but they were engaged and that was enough for Miranda to admit that the interns were right after all. They were going to go viral after all.
At the end of her day, she was discussing with Richard. She was ready to come back. She had to come back. She needed to have skin in the game. She laid down her offer. And stood 10 toes down on it. Richard accepted her offer just happy to have one of his favorite people back in the hospital. The hospital hadn't felt right without her around. There was a Miranda Bailey-sized hole in the team and he was anticipating the day she'd come back to fill it. He was slightly disappointed she wasn't coming back as chief but he understood. She was trying to obtain a healthy work-life balance. And he admired her for that.
When she got home she prepared dinner for the family. She was going to share with them she was heading back to work. She had gotten so accustomed to the stay-at-home mom thing and she even was starting to kill it in her eyes. Kids had breakfast, packed lunches, and dinner ready. They could expect her and Ben to be in the same room more often. She was there when they went to bed and when they woke up in the morning. And now she was heading back to work and their new normal was going to be shattered. She was determined to stick to her plans to be able to do the clinic teach surgery and come home to her husband and kids. Nothing more than what she laid out. The hospital needed her, the future of medicine needed her, but more importantly, her family needed her and she wasn't going to comprise that ever again.
