CHAPTER XIV
300 AFTER CONQUEST

BRIENNE

Disgrace, Brienne thought to herself. Oathkeeper laid resting in its scabbard at her waist, yet it felt heavier than it ever has before, the name and the blade. Her wounds, both mental and physical were still healing, but Brienne wasn't sure it would all be fixed. None of it really could.

"She didn't care, Pod."

She said, absentmindedly, nearly drunk from the ale which graced itself in her mug. Brienne and the only companion she had beside her horse, Podrick Payne, had made it back to the Inn at the Crossroads, to rest and recover, she had told him. But in all honesty, Brienne didn't know where she was going, what she would do, what there was to do. She was lost.

"Arya ran. Sansa didn't want my help. What kind of servant am I if I cannot even serve?"

Brienne huffed with frustration, taking a long, deep sip of her ale. Podrick remained quiet for a long time, but responded after a while in his usual quiet, but cheery type of voice that could make a rainy day shine.

"If it's any consolation..I think that you are someone worth following, and someone who serves faithfully and justly."

Brienne smiled at that, rubbing her eyes as she nodded, grateful for his words.

"Thank you, Pod."

"Of course, my Lady."

The pair continued to drink for a while, new faces coming in and out of the tavern throughout the night. The two moved away to a more quiet corner of the room, not wanting too much interaction with anyone.

"Where are you headed?"

Somebody asked another, two men with swords at their sides sat at a table with one another, chuckling.

"Riverrun."

"What a shithole."

"Aye, last I saw it. Last I saw it, the Freys made a muck of it. They lost it, y'know."

"Lost it?"

"Oh yeah. The gnarly fellow..fucking the one they call the Blackfish."

"The Tully?"

"Aye, Bryden Tully, the famous fucking Blackfish. He and his remaining Tully rebels have taken back Riverrun."

Brienne continued to listen to these men, now interested as she leaned closer as if to hear better."

"My Lady?"

"Pod, be quiet. Listen."

"There'll be siege soon. Soon as Ser Kevan Lannister sends for his army at Casterly Rock, Riverrun will be surrounded completely. Siege means opportunity."

"That's fair. Mayhaps I'll join ya in this endeavor."

"You should. Fighting for the Lannisters gets you paid."
