Winter hated love. He hated seeing dragons waltzing around with their partners, holding talons and laughing together. He hated attending royal events just for there to be a dance, where he could not participate due to his lack of a partner. He hated love.

In reality, he was just lonely. Bitter, sad, lonely.

The prince sighed, his sad eyes reflecting his inner conflicts of emotions. If he hated love so much, then why was he head-over-heels for not one, but two dragons he was supposed to hate? The question spun around in Winter's mind for days and days, but no answer came to him.

Each time he saw the two, his heart ached and ached and ached. He longed for them to just understand how he felt, since he was too scared to admit his feelings. Winter hated having the emotions he had. What was he supposed to do with them? He was wasting those emotions on dragons he would never stand a chance with.

The IceWing scribbled a series of harsh lines across the words he had written, causing a rip to tear into the scrollpaper. He had hoped to write some sort of cheesy love letter to both Moon and Qibli, but the embarassment burned at him with each letter that engraved into the scroll. This was useless.

The overwhelming, torturous longing in his chest made him want to curl up and die. Tears pressed at his eyes as he swallowed back a frustrated, pathetic wail. Winter tore up the scroll, tossing it aside and pushed the quill away. He had blinked back the tears, but his eyes still burned. He exhaled a sigh and sat up, turning to the entrance to his cave. Class would be starting soon. He should get going.

Winter started to gather his belongings to start the day, when a stack of papers caught his attention. They weren't hidden, but Winter hadn't noticed them before. He peered at them curiously.

'School dance tomorrow! Bring a date or a friend!'

Winter's jaw fell agape, staring at the invitation in front of him. Why hadn't he heard of this yet? Why were they here? Was Qibli handing them out?

His thoughts immediately cluttered with worry. Am I going to be alone? Will someone ask me out? Will Moon or Qibli ask me out? Kinkajou? She likes me.

Will I ask anyone out?

He thought back to his attempt at the love letter. Probably not.

Just as he was about to turn around and resume his activities, a warm talon gripped his shoulder. Winter spun around and was greeted by a face that always haunted his daydreams. Qibli gazed back at him, then a smile split across his face. "Hey, Winter!" He said casually, blissfully unaware of how much the IceWing loved him. "Thinking about who you'll take to the dance?" He gestured to the scrolls in front of them.

"Um," Winter managed after a moment. "No. I've only seen this now." He rolled his shoulder away from the blistering heat of Qibli's scales on his. The SandWing removed his talon.

As much as Winter felt relief from the heat, he missed the touch. It was comforting. And some little part of him did enjoy the strange feeling of the burning warmth. It was like touching the sun.

"Then maybe you could ask out Moon?" Offered Qibli. Winter was taken aback. He searched the SandWing's gaze for jealousy or sarcasm, or something that hinted to him that Qibli didn't want Winter to ask out Moon. But he found nothing. Qibli was as confusingly genuine as ever. It, unfortunately, only made Winter love him more.

"No, no," Winter shook his head. "I'm not even going to the dance. Plus, you should ask her out. Not me."

Qibli only shook his head at Winter's point. He only remarked, "You aren't going? Why?"

"I just don't want to," he shrugged, hoping that he achieved the unbothered look he was going for. "I don't like that mushy stuff." Winter grabbed his belongings, a couple blank scrolls, a quill, and textscrolls. "C'mon, Qibli, we gotta get to class."

"Right," Qibli said, not looking concentrated at all about the upcoming class. He strolled over to his side of the cave, picking up his own scrolls and sidled up to Winter as they left the cave. They walked side by side in the hallways, where Qibli brought up the subject of the dance again.

"Well, if you had someone to go with, I bet you'd go."

The IceWing rolled his eyes at his clawmate, trying to ignore the pull in his love-starved heart. "No, I wouldn't."

Qibli looked over at him, regarding him with an expression that Winter didn't know what to think of. He furrowed his brows at the SandWing. "What?"

"Will you be my date, Winter?" He asked in the most sweet, innocent voice Wintee had heard him use. His heart stopped for a brief, wild moment, and he was very aware of how his face flushed and how his eyes flew open wide to stare at him. He stumbled a little, unable to walk properly to his destination when his mind was spinning. Winter remained quiet for a while, processing the question from Qibli.

He knew that Qibli could see the shock and conflict written across Winter's face, but he didn't bother to hide it. Qibli didn't ask him again, but he waited patiently in silence as they walked to their classroom.

As they entered the classroom, Winter had no time to answer Qibli. He couldn't talk about this in front of other dragons. No way.

Qibli seemed to understand this, because he still didn't ask again.

Winter knew how easy he could get out of the situation with a simple 'no.' But he couldn't say it. He wanted this.

When the class ended, Winter swept into the hallway and stood at the wall outside the entrance, waiting for Qibli to emerge from the classroom. When he did, he spotted Winter and joined him. "Hey."

Winter swept him aside without replying. Qibli looked surprised at this, but made no move to intercept him. He pulled the SandWing aside to a quiet hallway, then let out a heavy sigh. Qibli watched him. "Yeah, fine, whatever, Qibli," he gushed. "I'll go to the dance with you." He cringed as soon as the words left his tongue.

Qibli's eyes went wide, then he gave a joyous smile, eyes shining happily. "Aww, you're the best, Winter!"

Winter couldn't stop himself as his expression softened. He smiled coyly at Qibli, fondness for his best friend making his heart ache.

Maybe.. he didn't hate love.
