Moonwatcher couldn't sleep.

All day, her mind swam with the thoughts of others. All night, her mind swam with her own thoughts.

Nighttime in the rainforest was dark and quiet. The chirping of singing crickets and other insects occupied the thick air, accompanied by the hoots of monkeys and low growls of nocturnal predators.

The stars shone in the obsidian abyss of the sky, twinkling mysteriously. She stared up at them, counting them as the night went on, more stars appearing as the sky got darker and darker, exposing the hidden faraway lights.

Her thoughts wandered as her eyes drooped. All she could think of was her dearest friend Kinkajou. Moon's eyes watered with tears as she thought back to the memories, fond yet awful st the same time. She remembered how she had cried over the problem with Darkstalker, how she had cried over her powers, how she had cried over everything that she was guilty for, even if it was beyond her control entirely. Each time, Kinkajou would comfort her, cupping her gentle talons around Moon's tear-stained cheeks.

She remembered how Kinkajou would flare her bright colours in the cafeteria, grinning widely at Moon, just happy to spend time with her. She then compared this to how dull and cold Kinkajou's scales had been when she had gone unconscious. She should have been the one who stayed by her side, but it was Turtle who did. Moon was gone with Darkstalker, wrapped up in the tragedies and kenopsia of the old Night Kingdom.

Moon had wept when she saw Kinkajou awake, and the RainWing had held her close, expression fond and soft as they sat in an old building in the Night Kingdom. She had finally felt alive and happy for the first time since Kinkajou's accident. She held onto her dearest friend as if she was the tether keeping her balanced to a previous, happy life, when things were simple and safe and full of nervous joy. Moon had wrapped her wings around Kinkajou, sobbing into her chest, begging her to stay and never leave her again.

Behind her, the trees rustled. Moon raised her head to look over. Kinkajou had slipped out of the leaves, looking sleepy. She curled up to the NightWing, wrapping her long body around hers, draping her arms over her chest. Kinkajou buried her head in the crook of Moon's neck, who leaned into the gentle, warm touch of her dearest companion. She wrapped her tail around Kinkajou's, closing her eyes.

"Why're you out here all alone?" Kinkajou asked, her voice quiet and soft in the silence that surrounded them. "I was cold and lonely," she said in a pouty tone. Moon knew she was joking, and gave a laugh at her.

"Aww, I'm sorry for leaving you," she apologized, her eyes barely open as she shifted her body around to look at Kinkajou. A content, lazy smile spread across her face. Kinkajou erupted in a series of giggles, leaning against Moon.

"What'cha thinkin' about?" Kinkajou prompted.

Moon hummed leisurely in thought. "Oh," she murmured. "Just us."

Kinkajou melted into her, grinning happily. "Awwwww, I love you."

Moon extended a wing to wrap around Kinkajou, embracing the RainWing closer. "I love you too," she murmured, eyes drooping as she became even more drowsy from the warmth.

"Goodnight," Kinkajou mumbled sleepily, nuzzling her head into her neck.

"Goodnight, my love."
