Snowfall hated rules.
She hated the stress, the pressure, the expectations, the rankings. She hated all the responsibilities that came with being a royal princess. It was ridiculous! She was a princess, why did she have to be so stressed all the time? She deserved a break.
And the pressure only intensified with the looming threat of Lynx. Lynx, that girl who was in each of her classes, excelling in each class, and competing with Snowfall with every mark or rank. And Snowfall hated it. She hated how Lynx was great at everything, and no matter how much they competed, Lynx never seemed to care. She never showed an ounce of dislike towards Snowfall. No, Lynx was entirely friendly towards her. She called Snowfall a friend, and Snowfall hated it. Absolutely, totally, entirely hated it.
It was nighttime, and Princess Snowfall was sitting outside in the courtyard. It was snowing, as always. The cold air flushed her cheeks, but she barely shivered. Snowfall watched as the moonlight illuminated the snow on the ground, making it glisten with small pops of colour, like shattered shards of opal. She wound her necklace around her finger, fidgeting back and forth, lost in thought. Her eyes, cast on the sky, did not see the approaching figure beside her. It was only when the snow crunched, when Snowfall turned her head to look over at the newcomer.
It was Lynx. Snowfall heaved a heavy, worn-out sigh. "What do you want?"
The freckled girl smiled, indifferent to Snowfall's anger. She sat down next to the princess, tucking her knees in to her chest. "I just want to talk," Lynx said cheerfully, her gentle voice floating on the steady breeze. Snowfall frowned and focused on the rhythmical bouncing of her jaw, chewing a piece of gum. It was annoyingly loud in the silence.
"Want some?" Lynx offered playfully, taking the gum out of her mouth and offering it to Snowfall. The princess fixed her with a disgusted look, and Lynx giggled, popping it back in her mouth. "Just kidding. Anyways, what's up?"
"Nothing," Snowfall said drily, letting the conversation drop.
Lynx picked it back up. "Aw, c'mon, it's not nothing," she prompted, poking Snowfall in the ribs with a finger. "What'cha thinkin' about?"
Snowfall shifted away from her, deepening her frown. Lynx was annoying, invasive, and oh-so pretty in the moonlight. Snowfall tried to ignore how gorgeous she was. "None of your business," she retorted. Then added haughtily, "You wouldn't understand anyway. Princess stuff."
Lynx stuck out her tongue. "Booooring," she complained. "Oh, whatever. Tell me anyway."
"No."
"Boooooorrriiinnggg," Lynx protested louder. "Why not? I like listening to your voice."
Snowfall blinked. "Huh? What the fuck is that supposed to mean?"
"It means that I enjoy being your friend," Lynx explained, half exasperated. Snowfall immediately began to shake her head in disagreement.
"We aren't friends," Snowfall argued stubbornly. "You know that."
Lynx rolled her eyes. "Well, to me, we're friends," she decided. "Plus, you're too stubborn to admit that we are."
"Yeah, right."
"So?" Lynx prompted, elbowing Snowfall obnoxiously. "What's up? What's on your mind, princess?"
Snowfall totally didn't like Lynx calling her that. Not at all. Her cheeks definitely did not flush red and her heart totally didn't stammer wildly in her chest. "I'm really stressed lately," she admitted. "Will you leave me alone now?" Snowfall hoped that Lynx would take that as a hint to stop bothering her all the time. But Lynx stayed put. Snowfall hated the fluttery, fuzzy feeling in her chest when she thought about how Lynx always stuck around to support her, no matter how many times Snowfall had pushed her away.
