---Winter and Qibli were best friends. They spent nearly all of their time together, practically inseperable. Though, Winter refused to admit that part.
They were just best friends.
Just. Friends. So why couldn't Winter wrap his head around the fact that they would never be anything else? Qibli was too good for him. That was why Moon chose Qibli over him. That was why Qibli chose Moon.
But it had been two months since Qibli and Moon broke up. They both claimed that they "didn't like each other that way and they both misunderstood their feelings".
So if Qibli didn't really love Moon in a romantic way, then he hadn't chosen her over Winter, which was one of Winter's worries.
Then what does Qibli think of me? Winter thought, as he sat alone on a balcony off Jade Mountain.Just friends. Winter reminded himself. Quit thinking these things. Qibli likes girls. But does he like guys too?
Winter felt a warm touch on his naturally cold scales, distracting him from his never-ending thoughts of Qibli.
And speak of the devil, there he was. The wonderfully charismatic SandWing of his dreams. Qibli. So perfect in every way imaginable. He was so stupidly attractive and strong and smart and sweet and caring and oh my moons. He was everything Winter wasn't in his own mind.
"Hey buddy," Qibli greeted with a sweet grin. Winter couldn't help but smile back a little, preferring to keep his composure.
"Hey dumbass," he greeted back, in his own affectionate way. He tried to ignore Qibli's wing brushed up against his, but it was really hard not to. Not only did the natural temperature of their scales clash, but also because of the way Winter's heart swelled at any kind of physical contact."Wanna come back inside with me and the others?" offered Qibli. "It's pretty late and I thought we could play some games or something."
Winter blinked up at the dark sky. He hadn't really considered what time it was until now. "I'd rather stay out here for a bit longer," he decided.
Qibli nodded. "Alright. I'll stay out with you."
"You can go inside-"
"Nah. I like sitting with you."
Winter blinked a couple times at Qibli, who was calmly gazing up at the stars. Then he turned his head up at the stars too, beginning to relax.
Maybe he didn't need this icy composure. He needed it cracked open.
"Qibli."
The SandWing tilted his head towards him slightly, humming a "hm?"
Winter kept his gaze transfixed on the stars, which kept him calm enough to keep going. "I.. I'm really grateful for your company. I'm glad to be your friend."
In the corner of his eye, he saw Qibli's eyes widen slightly. "I mean, you too, but.. Winter, why are you telling me this? Are you okay right now? Is this a joke?"
The IceWing met Qibli's gaze as steadily as he possibly could. "I'm dead serious. Just listen, please." Winter just wanted to let his feelings out. He didn't care anymore. "Qibli, I-" he paused for a moment, hesitating, then finally broke down. Salty tears ran down his scales, and he dipped his head down. Qibli now wrapped his wing around Winter, and suprisingly, he liked the feeling of the warmth.
"Hey, hey," Qibli murmured. "It's okay. Whatever it is, you don't have to say it if it's too much."
"I know, I know," Winter said, finding himself leaning into Qibli's touch. "But I need to get this off my chest."
Winter inhaled sharply. "Dammit Qibli, I'm in love with you!" He felt a new rush of tears stream down his face, followed by Qibli tensing up.
After a long beat of silence, finally, a "what." from Qibli.
"I've been in love with your stupid ass for so fucking long, Qibli," Winter went on. "I couldn't do it anymore, I had to tell you. And- and if you hate me, then so be it. I've spent too long dreaming about you."
"You're just so perfect, I don't even think someone like me can even compare to you, or let alone be with someone like you. I don't deserve you-"
And then, he was cut off by Qibli wrapping himself around Winter. "Shut up. Just shut up," Qibli demanded. "Don't think of yourself like that, Winter. you're amazing and sweet, but you don't even know it. I love you so fucking much, Winter."
"You- you what."
"I love you."
And like that, Winter and Qibli were no longer best friends. They weren't even friends. They were boyfriends, just as the two had always imagined.
"We'll probably end up married one day." It didn't seem so unlikely now.
