The First Year Student

Chapter 4: The First-Year Student

Just like last year and the previous years before, the entrance ceremony of the Night Raven College would be held in the Mirror Chamber. When the senior students, house wardens, vice house wardens, and headmage arrived, they were surprised at the scene they witnessed.

Inside the mirror chamber are the coffins of the incoming freshmen students. It could be unlocked by the use of a special key. However, one of the coffins is unlocked. The lid of the coffin is opened. At the front of the unlocked Coffin is a human.

A young man with average looks is standing in front of the unlocked coffin. He has a blue-tinted black hair and amber eyes. If his height would be estimated, he would be taller than the Heartslabyul house warden Riddle Roseheart, and a few inches shorter than the house warden of the Scarabia Kalim Al-Asim.

The young man is dressed in a black turtleneck clothes. Beneath its color, there was an embedded design of golden folded wings at each side. The young man is wearing black pants paired with heeled black boots which have a gold and purple pattern at the front. The young man is dressed in the Night Raven College's Ceremonial Robes without the robes.

Beside the young man is a gray monster (his familiar?) cat with blue flaming ears. The gray cat is enveloped by a black robe. It looks too loose and too big for the monster. It didn't fit the being at all.

And now, all of the people who have witnessed the young man now know where his ceremonial robes went.

The arrival of the people in the mirror chamber went unnoticed by the young man. He has his attention elsewhere. In his hands is his cell phone. His thumbs are making small movements on the screen. The pair of amber eyes are focused intently on the phone. The expression on the young man appeared troubled with the crease of his eyebrows but his amber eyes and lips were calm.

Seeing that they went unnoticed in their arrival, the heartslabyul house warden Riddle Roseheart became offended. His blood pressure has risen and looks like he would pop off a nerve out of him. It wasn't only the young man's ignorance and nonchalantness that offended Riddle Roseheart's sensibilities.

It was also for bringing a familiar and not being dressed properly for the entrance ceremony. He doesn't care if the young man has gotten out of the coffin on his own- showing his outstanding magical prowess and capabilities. As a student of Night Raven College, he must abide by the School Rules.

Before the first day of classes, the young man has already shown a blatant disrespect for the school rules! Aside from Riddle Roseheart's bad 1st impression of the young man, the vice house warden of the Heartslabyul sighed as he the young man engrossed on his phone and not minding his surroundings.

As for Trey Clover the Vice Housewarden of Heartslabyul, he couldn't help but see some similarities between the young man with his fellow 3rd Year and Heartslabyul Student Cater Diamond. Someone who can't keep their eyes out of their Phone and Social Media.

" Dear me! "

It was only when the Headmaster Dire Crowley exclaimed and gasped that the young man's gaze from his phone moved away. The pair of amber eyes gaze toward the Headmaster before going to the other people in the Mirror Chamber. The young man shows an expression of surprise.

" Opening the gate and stepping out of it on you're own! Such Temerity and Impatience! "

The young man blinked at the headmaster before muttering.

" The Gate that you were talking about Sir... This Coffin? "

" Correct, young man! How about calling me Sir, you can call me Headmaster! After all, you are one of the Chosen. "

" Chosen? "

" Hmmm...Your mind must be disoriented by the teleportation magic. Let me explain to you, young man. You are currently at Night Raven College a prestigious learning institution for magic in Twisted Wonderland. You are one of the mages chosen to study in this prestigious learning institution. I am Dire Crowley, the headmaster of this prestigious institution. "

The confused and dazed look of the young man disappeared replaced by comprehension.

" So this is a magic academy... "

" Correct. What is your name young man? "

" My name.... "

The young man furrows his brows. There was an expression of pain, struggle, and hesitation in his eyes. For a few seconds, the young man was silent. Looking down at the floor, the young man eventually answered.

" ....My name is Yuu. Sir– Headmaster. "

" Your surname Mr Yuu? "

Biting his lip, Yuu answered.

" .. Just Yuu... Please, call me only Yuu.  "

Yuu muttered while he glanced at his phone. The atmosphere in the mirror chamber became strange when the young man refused to tell his surname. Some students started whispering and having their opinions about the strange first year.

Eventually, since Yuu refuses to tell his surname, the headmaster sighed.

" Very well, Mr Yuu. "

Yuu showed a wan smile.

" Thank you. – Headmaster. "

" Nevertheless... "

The headmaster turned his gaze towards Yuu's familiar for a brief moment before continuing.

" It was now time for the orientation. Let's begin the Entrance Ceremony!  "

With a snap of the headmaster's finger adorned by strange claw-like ornaments, podium chairs appeared in the Mirror Chamber along with a Floating Mirror in the center of the room.

When the podium chairs appeared, the students who came with the headmaster started taking their seats.

Seeing the senior students taking their seats, Yuu showed an uneasy expression. His grip on his phone tightened. The headmaster's gaze moves to Yuu when he notices him not taking a seat with the Senior Student.

" Hmmm... Before the sorting, there would be a speech held by me, Mr Yuu. If you're not comfortable sitting with the senior students and you are not still sorted, maybe this would do. "

With another snap of the headmaster's finger, a chair appeared near the first-row podium seat but not enough for the student in the first row to approach and whisper to Yuu for a conversation.

Yuu bowed his head before bringing his silence familiar to him and took a sit on the lone chair while everyone heard the headmaster's speech. With every word that came out of the headmaster's mouth, Yuu paid attention.

Hugging 'his familiar' with him, Yuu can feel that his heart is beating faster than normal. He was anxious, afraid, excited, and nervous. It was a multitude of emotions inside his mind.

Minutes later, the headmaster's speech ended. It was time for the arrival and sorting of the first years.

Turning his gaze to Mr Yuu, the headmaster says.

" Since you broke out of your own and are the 1st freshman to arrive, it is only right for you to be the 1st first year to be sorted this year. "

Yuu left his chair bringing along his familiar with him. Hugging it on his chest. His cell phone is tucked away in his pocket. Approaching the headmaster who was in the center of the mirror chamber and beside the floating mirror with a face inside it, Yuu says.

" Headmaster, please sort Grim first. "

Silence followed after he said those words.
