Chapter 1
28th June 1941; the day they met.
The pain of the past.
He noticed the pain. The one piercing through his head and the one throbbing on his side. There were others, on his back and on his shoulder. But the one he felt most was in his head. Blinding him, making his breath hitch inside his throat. His vision was telescoping. The drumbeat booming non-stop wasn't real, he knew.
The next thing he noticed was the rain. He blinked it away from his eyes. He was drenched. Down the very core of his being. He noticed the pool of puddle next to him. Blood and vomit mingling in it had turned it a dark muddy gray. Was it early morning or early evening, he mused idly.
He leaned back against the low wall and tried to remember what led him to this place. He blinked at the strange colors popping in his eyes and shook his head.
That was a bad Idea! The pain was now a megaphone of noises, colors and stabbings.
He closed my eyes and the frantic face of Sameer bloomed in front of him.
'Run, Rudra, Run. Dinu has betrayed us. Run .... Right now !!' he screamed. He pushed him away and he stumbled back.
Rudra shouted at him. 'And You? What about you? What about the rest of the group? I can't just leave you on your own!'
Sameer's voice broke. 'They are gone. Arrested, shot or, maybe even dead.'
He said, 'They know! Dinu has blabbed EVERYTHING! You have to go, NOW! They'll be here any minute!'
Rudra shouted at him. 'I'm not going anywhere without you, Sameer!' but Sameer rapidly shook his head.
They had chosen this abandoned Masjid to finalize the plans to raid the local armory. But they'd been found. Once again, they failed the mission. Their last remaining secure meeting place had been exposed.
Rudra smacked his forehead and turned to Sameer's frantic face. He was going nowhere without Sameer.
Then he felt it. A ringing slap on his face. It spun him around and sent him flying across the room. Sameer picked him up and dragged him out of there.
They were outnumbered. It was too late. Rudra's feet had collapsed under him. But, Sameer, the fool, wouldn't give up. He dragged and finally carried him out of there. They managed to hide in the bog behind the Masjid.
They could hear them. The thumping vibrations of their footsteps rang a knell in Rudra's heart.
The shout, 'Search them out. They can't go far. I've shot one of them. They'll be somewhere close by,' was familiar. Spoken with a British accent. That must have been Rory Marshal.
