Chapter 11
Agni
The servant entered at this point and the people stopped talking. He placed a tray in front of Agni. There were some half-eaten kochuri and aloo dum in it. He sat back on the sofa and putting the plate on his knees, proceeded to eat.
He took a mouth full of the kochuri and bit into a shiny, green chili and made a big 'ssssssss!' when the heat hit his mouth.
Flapping his hand in front of his face he shouted at the servant, 'Ai, Bolai, bring me some yogurt, this chili's bloody hot!'
Animesh frowned at him and said, 'Didn't you eat breakfast? Why are you eating now?'
Still flapping and oohing dramatically he mumbled, 'I got hungry again.'
Animesh gave him a dark look and nudged the glass of water in front of him.
Rudra watched them in silence.
Once his chili drama settled, Rudra said, 'hm so, the basis of her accusation is her unfounded suspicion that you two are having an illicit affair, am I right? So, I'd suggest an out of court settlement for this. We can hold a mediation, talk to her and try to convince her to withdraw the case . That'll be the simplest solution.'
The brothers nodded.
Rudra turned to Agni and said, 'please don't mind me asking, but why are you unmarried? Isn't getting married the best way to shut her up for good?'
Agni glanced at him and then turned towards the door.
'Bolai!' he yelled. 'Bring me a wet towel, my face feels rock solid.' He didn't turn back and Rudra waited for his answer.
The servant ran in with a wet rag a moment later. He wiped his face with it and when he handed it back, he commanded the elderly servant to get his pot of cream from his room.
Rudra and Animesh watched him in silence.
Another minute went by and Animesh spoke up on his behalf. 'We're looking for a suitable person but haven't found anyone yet.'
Agni spoke up finally with a smirk and a shrug.
'None of them have proven worthy. They are all after something or the other, selfish users. Incapable of any genuine feelings. Forget about sincere devotion or loyalty, they are incapable of basic human decency.'
Then added in a languid tone, 'I don't want to align myself with the family of such greedy bastards and bitches that one and all of them have turned out to be.'
He let out a dramatic long drawn sigh. 'Poor sad wee 'ittle me!'
With an indrawn breath and an exasperated "Bhai!!".. Animesh's rather staid formality fell away briefly.
Agni was dabbing cream on his face, he turned and said, 'what? I've only spoken the truth, haven't I? Was even a single word a lie? Why do I need to mark my words when speaking about these blood sucking leeches when it's their faults that they are so below par?'
Animesh drew in a breath and looked scandalized.
A new person entered the room now and diverted them. She looked very smart and elegant, about mid-thirties, dressed immaculately in a traditional cotton saree.
She sat on the arm of the sofa next to Agni and Agni put his arm around her waist and dragged her closer to himself. She grinned at him and said, 'Of course you can't express your opinions! The young master must always be perfectly polite! How dare you speak the truth??'and laughed aloud.
Agni looked at her and his face broke into a big smile. Rudra noted the change in him and his eyes narrowed.
The newcomer added, 'no one is smart enough, good enough or beautiful enough for our darling Bhai, amiright?'
