"What the..." I muttered to myself as the water began to bubble around me, a sense of dread creeping over me. "Oh shit," I cursed under my breath, realizing that whatever was causing this, it couldn't be good.
"Guys?!" I screamed, my voice echoing off the walls of the sewer. "Guys, the water!" Panic surged through me as I called out desperately for Pope and JJ.
"Amelia, get out of there!" Pope's voice rang out, filled with urgency. "Now!"
"I don't have time!" I shouted back, the rushing sound of water growing louder by the second. "Guys!" I screamed again, my heart pounding in my chest.
Fear gripped me as I scrambled to climb up the ladder as fast as I could, hoping to save some precious breath before being submerged.
The drain in the road was sealed shut, leaving me with no escape route. All I could do was hope that Pope and JJ were on their way to help.
"JJ! Pope!" I cried out, desperation lacing my voice as I reached through the gaps in the bars, feeling the water rising higher and higher. "I'm over here!" I shouted, straining against the bars as I caught a glimpse of the two boys crouching down, their faces etched with concern.
With all my strength, I wrapped my hands around the bars, pushing with all my might, trying to make it budge from the inside.
"Get me out of here!" I pleaded desperately, the panic rising in my voice. "Pull it!" I urged, my heart racing as I felt the water creeping higher around me.
"Come on, come on," JJ's voice echoed in the darkness, and I could sense the urgency in his tone as he and Pope pulled simultaneously.
"Please don't let me die, please don't let me die!" I begged, my voice reaching a crescendo of fear and desperation. "Guys, hurry!" I called out, the water now reaching my neck, threatening to engulf me completely.
I could hear the grunts of the boys struggling, their efforts to open the drain proving futile against the force of the water.
Panic surged through me as I felt time slipping away, the darkness closing in around me.
"JJ!" I cried out, my voice laced with desperation and fear.
"I'm here, I'm here," JJ's voice reached me, a faint ray of reassurance amidst the turmoil.
"Pope!" I shouted, my heart pounding in my chest as I grasped for any semblance of hope.
"Don't worry, Lia, we're gonna get you out!" Pope's words, though tinged with concern, offered a glimmer of comfort in the midst of the chaos.
"Please, JJ, please!" I pleaded, my voice trembling with raw emotion.
But then, as the water surged higher, swallowing me whole, my cries fell silent. My head submerged under the murky depths, the darkness closing in around me, and all I could do was pray that somehow, someway, they would find a way to rescue me from this watery grave.
After what felt like an eternity, the boys finally managed to pull the metal away from the drain opening. Gasping for air, I pulled myself out, coughing and struggling to stabilize my breathing as I collapsed onto the ground, laying on my front.
"Are you okay?" Pope's worried voice reached me, but I couldn't find the strength to respond.
"Lia, you good?" JJ's concern was palpable in his tone.
Weakly, I managed to nod my head, offering a sarcastic thumbs up. "Never better," I managed to croak out, my voice barely above a whisper.
After a few more moments of trying to catch my breath, I slowly pushed myself up onto my knees, my hand flying to the back of my shorts.
