4.
The morning doesn’t improve my foul mood, only making it worse. Mother enters my chambers without knocking, a tray of breakfast in her hands. She sets it across my lap and I sit up earnestly. The plate has a pretty waft of bacon, eggs and rashers all piled together on top of each other.
“Thanks Mother,” I say trying to ease away the pain and anger in my voice. Mother smiles sweetly at me and sits at the end of my bed.
“I need to tell you something.” She says finally and I gulp. I already know about Geoff lying to me, thank you very much! Mother stopped her watchful gaze from me and flickered her glance out my window. It wasn’t exactly a nice view, but hey, it’s my Mother here.
“Geoff told me this morning that you over-heard our conversation about his new job.” She says eventually summoning enough courage to tell her ferocious daughter dreading news.
I nod my head.
“Unfortunately yes I have.” I reply bitterly, sticking my fork deep into the bacon belly. Mother sighs at me and twirls her fingers with my duvet.
“Clover dear, you know he couldn’t tell you, and he couldn’t have refused!” Mother says raising her voice above my depressed mood.
Mother lifts up her shoulders, and lets her head droop.
“Eat up; you have the prep team coming later on today,”
I groan. Of course, my prep team is coming over to beautify me for the Victory Tour.
I finally demolish my fry up, while my Mother runs around frantically trying to get everything ready. I must, I presume, look good to them.
We try and forget our awkward conversation earlier this morning, as she runs a rose petal bath for me. I don’t stink, but Mother says I’m old enough to shower daily now and since we have a never-ending water supply. I drop myself into the shallow pool and let the warmth smother me. A groan of excitement passes over me, but I urge myself on and soon embrace the warm delicate water, happily.
As soon as I am thoroughly washes through, Mother orders me out while passing me an aqua blue towel.
