The next day, Erie stood next to Carmen in a pure white tulle dress outside Rosalith's main gate and watched as her father, Elwin, Joshua, Clive and the soldiers prepared to make their way to Phoenix Gate. At such moments, Erie was glad not to be Elwin's squire as well, who was trying to put the halter on what must have been a somewhat stubborn Chocobo today. But shortly before the horns sounded, he had succeeded and Elwin could mount and announce: "Friends! We ride towards Phoenix Gate. May the blessings of the crystal be with us!" He raised his clenched fist in the air.
"And guard the flame of the Phoenix forevermore!" the soldiers shouted and cheered.
"His Grace rides - open the gate!"
Once the gate was open, Rodney gave the order for the platoon to leave. Erie slumped her shoulders and clung to the desperate hope that all would be well. She turned to Clive, who had to stay behind with Sir Tyler and Sir Wade to explore the moors. The two just joined the young lord and greeted him. Erie also went over to say goodbye to the small group.
"Erie," Wade greeted her first, smiling kindly. He was only five years older than her and the two shared a similar mindset when it came to life in the service of the Duchy. They had often sat on the sidelines after training together on the practice field and philosophized about where their lives would go. Wade had always wanted to be a strong and loyal shield for Rosaria. He loved Rosaria as much as Erie and wanted to give everything for this country. Now he stood before her, a proud shield of Rosaria, and she was very proud of him as well.
"Hey Wade," Erie greeted, "take good care of Lord Rosfield."
"Of course." He smiled winningly and tapped his fist on his muscular chest, which was covered by armor. Beside him stood Sir Tyler, who also greeted Erie.
"Good luck in the hunt and in Phoenix Gate. I look forward to your return," she said, giving Clive a broad smile. She leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. "Take care of yourselves."
Clive briefly grabbed the spot where her lips had touched his skin. A satisfied tingle ran through Erie at the sight of the lord, who now seemed a little nervous, and for a brief moment she felt sure that their future would be a good one.
Throughout the day, Erie did exactly as Elwin had instructed her. She sent Carmen off to look around the servants' quarters, and she herself strolled around the castle and over the estates under various alibis. Sometimes Erie could be found sitting on a stone bench in the gardens, sometimes she treated herself to a snack and chatted cheerfully with the servants in the kitchen. Sometimes she was seen at Jill's side. The two young women laughed and got along splendidly. In reality, Erie told Jill what Elwin had told her. She considered Jill a sister of sorts, a companion at court. She trusted Jill and knew that if something was truly in the works, Jill had to be ready, too.
