"Look, Erie, I've sewn you some new clothes."
After Erie had borrowed and worn clothes from others over the last few days, since she couldn't sew for the life of her, Hortense eventually presented her with a completely new ensemble and the first outfit she had fabricated in freedom. Erie looked at the combination of pants, tunic and vest, made out of light, high-quality material, with fascination. The pants presented in a rich, dark red color, the legs quite wide, Erie was sure she could move wonderfully in them. The simple, white tunic, made of cotton, was pleasant to the touch. Finally, there was the vest, essentially gray, but with red elements, such as the red trim going around the entire garment, the strings used to fasten it, and the matching red belt for her sword sheath.
"That's beautiful, Hortense. Where did you get this lovely fabric? It feels expensive."
"Lady Charon offered me the fabric pretty quickly. Sorry, shouldn't I have asked?" Hortense's eyes grew wide as she looked over at Charon.
Erie eyed the genius merchant as well, giving her a happy smile. "Lady Charon, you honor me with your generosity."
Charon waved it off, grumbling, as she took a drag on the cigarette she always kept lit in her hand, blew the smoke leisurely into the air and added: "Don't mention it, lass. Don't mention it. We don't want our princess to have to walk around in scratchy, unattractive clothes, don't we?"
"Oh, because you almost became Princess of Rosaria back in the day?" Hortense asked excitedly. "That's why I chose the colors like that!" Immediately afterwards, her eyes widened as she looked down at the floor, visibly shocked she blurted out a painful memory of Erie's. A memory Erie had shared with her. "Sorry," she added quickly.
Erie shrugged. "It's all right, Hortense, you can't escape your past. Besides, everyone knows about mine anyway. I'm making the best of the present. This outfit is perfect for a little fresh start. It's incredibly thoughtful and sweet of you to choose the colors you did. I'm going to try it on straight away."
The garment fit perfectly on Erie's body. The pants swung comfortably on her legs when she moved. The tunic and vest felt just as comfortable. Now that Erie wore the clothes, looking at herself, at the colors, she was glad for Hortense's decision. This might be the outfit in which she would rescue Rosaria, like a promise for the future.
She ran out of the dormitory enthusiastically, into the main hall to show Hortense and all bystanders the fit.
"How do I look?" she asked, spinning around happily, her clothes following her every movement smoothly, "and please don't say 'like a princess' now."
"Like a strong warrior!" Mid exclaimed, who had jumped excitedly out of her orchestrion, which was still under construction, to inspect Erie's new clothes too.
"Thank you, Mid." Erie didn't know if the young girl said that because she thought Erie wanted to hear it that way or if she meant it, but she took what she could get.
