They crossed the woods south of Claireview. Even though the blight had already devoured much of the world, life in Sanbreque still was quite varied. The trees stood proudly, firmly and majestically side by side. Their leaves rustled softly in the fresh wind. Between the branches and twigs, small birds hopped from branch to branch, singing merry songs. On the ground, animals scurried through the undergrowth, their presence only betrayed by the rustling of leaves or the cracking of twigs. The air filled with a pleasant smell of nature - of moss, damp earth and the scent of wild flowers. For a moment, Erie realized she was really and truly free, she could go wherever she wanted, she was no longer held back by authorities who ruled her life, and that gave her a little more peace of mind.

Finally, a wooden gate appeared in front of them in the middle of the forest. It was open. Behind it stood a single guard. When he caught sight of Gav, he raised his hand in greeting, nodding respectfully to Erie and the bearers as they passed.

"We have a few new ones here," Gav announced to the guard. He nodded and replied: "Take the sick one to the chapel, there are still beds available. The others are welcome to have a look around and, when they're ready, get something to eat in the tavern."

"All right!" Gav raised his hand before leading the party onwards, now a clearing ahead of them - well, not so much a clearing as another cave-like structure of the Fallen. Here, too, settlers had probably recognized the advantages of the fallen ships scattered all over the world and settled in them. Just that the flora and fauna were much more alive here, no dead desert, just green plants growing up to the lofty heights of the stone monuments with small animals scurrying through the grass everywhere. Erie looked around in awe. Humans may have built majestic cities all over the world, but using fallen structures was a genius move - hardly anyone would search every single former airship when looking for bearer liberators.

"Let's get this poor chap into the chapel, maybe we can ease his pain," Gav said as they stopped outside a building that seemed to be said chapel, "you're welcome to have a look round

"Let's get this poor chap into the chapel, maybe we can ease his pain," Gav said as they stopped outside a building that seemed to be said chapel, "you're welcome to have a look round." He addressed these words to Hortense and the other bearer.

Hortense shook her head. "I'm not leaving him alone. He risked his life for us. I owe it to him to stay by his side for as long as it takes." The other bearer agreed with Horstense.

"Let's go together then. Come, Erie, we'll explain everything to you in the chapel."

Gav and the uninjured bearer led the way. They proceeded to lead them down a small staircase into a backroom with some beds inside. Gav obviously knew his way around. They carefully placed the injured man on mattress. He couldn't stretch out his white limbs, but lay stiffly crouched, moaning, visibly in pain. Hortense knelt down to stroke his hair soothingly.

"Thank you for saving us," she whispered.

"Care to explain to me what all of this means now?" Erie asked, a sinking feeling in her stomach. She knew from the reactions of the others she lacked knowledge of something very important. That's why she had to ask, even if people thought she was stupid.
