In the weeks that followed, neither Benni nor Cid mentioned the issues that Benni had raised with Erie. In order to accommodate Benedikta, Erie did not conceal the letters from Dhalmekia from Cid, but did not draw his attention to the passages in which it was described that Hugo Kupka and Benedikta Harman had been particularly friendly with each other during the visit of the Waloeder secret agent either.
Erie was convinced that Cid knew about it and decided to pretend that he and Benni had come to an arrangement. After her brief outburst, Benni soon went back to her usual behavior towards Erie, which only strengthened Erie's belief.
As Erie had already suspected, it was inevitable that Benni would be sent abroad more and more often from then on. The days when Benni, Cid and Erie had a balanced schedule, with Erie staying at the castle most of the time and sometimes spending time with one of them, sometimes with both at the same time and sometimes with neither, were over. Now Cid and Erie were alone far more often, even more so than when Benedikta trained to be part of the royal intelligencers.
Every now and then Erie saw Cid looking thoughtfully out of the window, or it took him several attempts to write letters because he seemed distracted, and sometimes she noticed him looking in her direction, lost in thought. When she then asked him if everything was all right, he seemed to become aware of his surroundings again and replied that he had just let his mind wander and happened to look in her direction.
These evasive apologies and the recent repeated mentions of the rumours of a love affair between Cid and her did not go by Erie untouched, although she was convinced that they had a deep and trusting friendship. The seemingly growing distance between Benni and Cid, his glances that lingered on her and the intimate moments they had occasionally spent together recently awakened thoughts in Erie that she hardly dared to explore.
And yet sometimes she couldn't help but shift her gaze from the parchment in front of her to Cid, who was looking at his own parchment, writing something or smoking a cigarette, returning her regard with a wink or his characteristic mischievous smile. Erie could feel the heat rising in her head at these moments and she returned to her paper nervously. The memory of the many times they had touched, hugged or looked at each other, sometimes in situations that involved intimate closeness, came back to her mind and made her a little tingly. But each time she told herself to suppress these emerging, confusing feelings.
Until suddenly everything happened very quickly.
"Erie, can you sing something for us?" asked Mia, a young girl, on one of her visits to Garnick. She was holding a lyre that Erie had often seen her practicing with.
"What makes you think I can sing?" Erie replied in surprise.
The girl sat down next to Erie on the stone bench at the edge of the village square and plucked the strings to produce a delicate sound.
