third person

maddie was up, pacing the halls. it was funny because the nurses documented that as 'abnormal' behaviour or 'excessive movement' after confining you to a tiny room, really only almost comparable to a jail cell. plus, there was nothing else really to do.

you could ask for art supplies, they had different therapies throughout the week but they wanted to cure depression by doing..nothing? no one was allowed to have a phone though. that was a strict rule.

you we're allowed to make friends, but not too good of friends, no hand holding or hugging or cuddling. then they would call you 'sexually inappropriate'. they wanted you to express your emotions but if you even had a glint of anger in your tone you got restrained by security and ativan shot into your leg.

she noticed the harsh contrast of gus' pink hair against the white wall while she walked past the day room.

"hi" she sat down next to him, they sat facing the window but the psych unit was on the fourth floor of the ten story hospital, leaving them to stare at a another part of the hospitals exterior walls.

"hi" , gus resonded. as far as life on the ward goes, they were basically already at best friend status after being partners un group yesterday.

"how long have you been in for?" maddie asked gus, no question was too personal here.

"four days, you?"

"three".

they were both relatively new. some of the patients had been admitted for weeks, a couple even for months.

"how'd you attempt?" he asked her abruptly, she didn't even flinch.

"pills"

"why?" he asked

"nothing left to live for" she stared through the window with so much focus she could basicaly count the stone particles of the concrete wall outside.

"i'm sorry" he really did empathize with her though. he'd been there. this wasn't his first admission.

"why are you depressed?" she asked in return, if thats what they were doing.

"nothing worth being happy about. the doctor told me it was biologic vulnerabilities that were activated by neurophysical components nd accelerated by environmental triggers"

gus spoke, mocking he doctors serious tone, "basically i was just destined to be fucked up".

"it's comforting meeting other people just as fucked in the head as me" maddie broke her gaze from the wall, turning to look at gus.

the sun from the window shone on his face, illuminating his brown eyes into shades of chocolate, gold, and honey.

"wanna be friends?" just asked the girl, "are we not already?"

"well, that answers it"

"it's maddie right?" he confirmed "yes"

"what's it short for? no one is ever named just maddie"

"madeline"

"that's a pretty name"

"what's gus short for? or just gus?"

"gustav"

"is that like russian or something?"

"swedish"

"oh"

-

"gus, i have your medication" a nurse interrupted them.

he swallowed his cocktail of pills with ease, taking the small paper cup of water from the nurse

"thank you" he told the nurse

"you know, if you tell them you're hearing voices they give you the good shit" gus said, turning to maddie

"very funny gustav" the nurse who was apparently still in earshot said

maddie and gus both laughed. it was hardly entertainment but it was so bland in there it seemed like the funniest thing in the world at the moment.

"madeline" another nurse interrupted. "dr. simmons is doing his rounds. he's waiting for you in interview room 3"

"well, i'm being summoned. see you later?" maddie asked

"certainly" gus said, sending her off to the psychiatrist
