When I was finally freed from my meetings at two in the afternoon I sat working in my office sitting on one of the couches by the fireplace which I looked over the long list of potential business opportunities and the information I could find on them. If anyone outside of Olivia knew the true extent that I was willing to go for success to ensure absolute certainty in everything I'd never have a single person stand against me. The problem was I was fucked up enough to want someone to dare to step to me.
Having challengers meant that from an outward perspective my net worth wasn't confirmed most people assumed it was similar to anyone I did business with. Even publicly WGI was only thought to be worth a tenth of what it was.
Oh well, it'll keep me entertained for a few more years.
Finding the appropriate document I began reading through confirming activities and anything of note until I heard the door open but the sound of heels was absent.
Glancing up I stared at Kate walking slowly through the room, and I could tell my surprise was evident.
"I asked Olivia to not tell you I was coming to see you," she says hanging her blazer over her arm as she stopped near me.
"And why did you do that?" I ask returning my eyes to the screen while I lifted the glass from the table and took a sip before setting it back down.
"Because I know you better then you think I do. You're putting together more blackmail Adrian, and you have pretty much created a city where people fear you. Fear isn't going to keep you invincible, one day someone or something will stand against you, and it will break apart the reality you make people believe," she says and I sigh slowly letting the breath out.
"I'd like to see someone try Kate, we both know if someone stood against Winters Group it would take me all of fifteen minutes to craft their downfall," I say removing the few people I'd flagged as not worth doing business with, or to be watched.
Everyone in New York would either stay out of my way or I'd craft them a downfall so spectacularly elaborate there would be no way for them to get out of it.
"That's not the point, Olivia tells me more then you think. If you ever plan to have a family with that woman, you will have to get rid of anything that could put your family at risk," she says and I nod.
"That's what I'm doing. It's the entire reason I've prepared myself to be able to work afar. I just need to make sure that this company is stable enough to go without Olivia and I always being present," I explain closing the computer after forwarding approvals to Kaylee.
"That's not what I mean. In ten years when you have a kid, how will you sleep at night knowing that your three to four year old will grow up to have all your enemies Adrian. A stalker is bad enough but in just a few months time, there's been blackmails, a court session, stalking, moving from a city for security purposes, and upped armed presence regarding you, and Olivia. One of you will get shot, and if it's her you'll go back to drinking, and tear the fucking city apart," Kate seemed to be more exasperated with my lack of a reaction to her words and still I didn't have the ability to flip a switch between business, my frustrated sister, and then business.
"If it's you," she continues before throwing up her arms which was a rare gesture of impatience from Kate who was equally as calm as me, "you tell me how Olivia will react, and don't tell me she will be strong. She's looked to you for safety, and protection the whole time she's known you, and she will never have the heart or soul to not be almost sickeningly in love with you. The odds could be a hundred to one, and if she looked at you she'd go where you went, regardless of if it's hell, or Fiji".
I knew she was right, and I hated that Kate's worry came from Olivia's own worry, it was a little dark pit in my chest that I'd never escape. Real love was dark, and Olivia and I knew that.
She'd go where you went, regardless of if it's hell, indeed.
"She'd never be able to cope with my death, it's the same reason she got annoyed at me for protocol being to get her to safety before me, and why she insists I have twenty-four hour security, that wasn't my idea, that was all Olivia the second she knew I was CEO. My little coffee addicted angel would never be able to deal with me dead or severely injured, just like I couldn't if she weren't here," I say refusing to meet Kate's eyes where I'd see an 'I told you so' look.
"See, don't allow your work to take the only good thing in your daily life from you, and the best, and last man she'd ever be able to love from her. In other words get your fucking shit together," Kate says and I met her eyes as she gave me a look only our mom could have pulled off, succeeding in making her look more like our late mother.
"My shit is together but I'll think of something," I say.
"Bullshit, you haven't thought about fuck all outside of work and the future with Olivia since you were seventeen. If you can destroy someone's career, you can protect yours, and create a plan for stabilizing the climate your future will be made in," she says and hands me a thermal bag with gingersnap cookies inside.
"Also picked up the entire batch of your favourite cookies from Starbucks, for tearing you a new one," she offers with a smile.
"Only Winters Siblings could argue, and have food be involved as a peace offering," I say setting the case down on my desk to open and taking in the smell of the cinnamon molasses, and sugar.
"Well, seemed safe to not have you pull your investment, and fuck my company sideways," Kate says and I laugh before taking one of the cookies.
"Your name was included in the 'no conflict' pact I signed with the boys," I point out and she hums.
"Well none the less eat your cookies, and treat your girlfriend to something nice," Kate says and I nodded knowing she will leave telling Olivia what I said, and now I will have to find something to do tonight for Olivia and I.
Shouldn't be too hard, I'll just leave for home early.
Continuing with what I had been working on I began to think of everything I could possibly do for my girlfriend, and I knew that it would have to be simple but awe inspiring for her. That was when the idea hit me and I quickly wrote down the details before putting the note into my jacket for when I planned to leave at four o'clock sharp.
Alright so we're nearing the end I'm planning this to be around the sixty mark I never do anything less in the history of this series so we shall hope I get it done. Comment, vote, and share. AnywaysPeace✌
