Shortly after, they were seated in the Alpha King's study. Which was very manly - as was he. He was a very captivating man, handsome and fit, appearing in his forties though she knew from experience that he would be older than that. Ronnie could tell why his, well most of his, people followed him. His aura of power was intense. She felt she created an unease in him but he couldn't place his finger on it. It unsettled her but she pushed it down.

Brock was sitting on the arm of the chesterfield sofa Ronnie and Brand sat in.

"He has never responded to questioning like that," Alpha King Amer said with exasperation. "I don't know why he responded so strongly to you, Brock. Does he have any history with your family or dragons in general?"

Brock and his father shook their heads.

"What did you sense, Lady Veronika?" Advisor queried.

"He was deeply agitated. I-I -" She stuttered trying to find the words without showing her hand too much. "Your words hit a nerve." She told them. "You're definitely on the right track. When he, uh, said to ask about Thom-" Ronnie halted at the same point, not to mimic Kainon but because she almost completed the name herself. "Does that mean anything to you? He was panicking... I don't think he really meant to say that."

Both Kings glanced at each other. King Paol answered, "There was a Prince Thomas - but he died during The Great Turbulence."

"The Great Turbulence. I've heard of that before," Ronnie responded, "The great outerworld war- ending when The Dark King of the Netherrealm was brought down by his own people?"

Advisor nodded, thoughtful - puzzle pieces falling for him before anyone else. He spoke to the room, "Partly. Thomas, one of his own sons, did turn on him. The King had many spawns- by the creed of their magic they could not directly kill him so he trusted them. The young Prince just had to make sure the King was in the wrong place at the right time. A representative of all the Kingdoms participated in the regicide."

Ronnie felt unease come from the Dragon and Alpha Kings. She looked at them. "Is there more?"

They both looked at each other again.

"Please. We need to know as much information as possible," Brock stated. The irony wasn't lost on him that he was keeping something from his father, but he didn't think Ronnie's past relationship was related.

King Paol huffed. "That was the official story. In truth the young Prince was not a willing participant. While he was a demon, he was mated to a human and lived in her realm. His mate - his pregnant mate - was taken hostage, by us. His betrayal was the price for her release. The task was simple, ensure the Dark King was where we needed him and then the Prince could have his family back and they could go on with their lives. We had always planned to uphold our end of the bargain but the ambush went south. Half the contingent were killed along with the Dark King, including the Prince."

Ronnie felt a cold chill go through her, her mind was having trouble taking in what was being said, but one part begged for clarity. "I thought Demons couldn't have mates."

Advisor spoke up, his voice becoming animated about the topic. "Matebonds are an interesting phenomenon. It is believed that all beings can have a mate, or more than one," He indicated to the three of them. "The Goddess blesses many, but the power level of a being and the attunement to their souls vary as does their awareness of whether they have found their mate. Shifters feel the matebond the most keenly, as they are two entities sharing a body and soul, those that practice magic have a different and involved attunement to their own self and the world." He shrugged. "Demons are just another level again. And perhaps many have not deserved the Goddess' gift and therefore have not been as abundantly blessed."
