Brand felt like he was losing his mind. He felt the burning need to shift and rip that piece of shit apart, but he couldn't shift. Something was blocking it, taking his ability from him.
Ronnies demon stared back at him.
She let out a low sad mewl that broke his heart. She got down to her hunches and crawled towards him, her hands alighting the way.
"No!" Kainon stormed. The fireball flared brighter and Ronnie flinched.
She took a long look at Brand. Her beautiful alien face open and longing. Her large black pool eyes relayed her deep sadness for where they were.
He whispered, "Just run."
She made a little click and swung around to approach Kainon. When he dropped the fireball she stopped, studying him. When she didn't immediately come further towards him, he stomped forward and grabbed her.
Brand screamed and bucked, trying to free his arms or shift or do something. He fell to the floor in his useless effort.
Kainon laughed as he carried Ronnies demon from the room. "Throw him in the dungeon, Crell."
The goblin came and picked him up bodily. Brand had a moment to be surprised by the creature's strength. "How can you let this happen?" He spat.
Crell didn't respond.
"She's your queen! He's no one!" He tried to fight again even though it was fruitless. He'd never felt so useless before. He yelled out in frustration. "What did you do to me? Why can't I shift?"
Crells head bobbed. "Warlock enchantment, part of your bindings. Was made for werewolves. Wasn't sure if it would work on a cat. You were lucky it didn't inhibit your healing."
They quickly arrived at the cells in the underground level. He wasn't too far from her then.
Crell placed him down. The cell was just a box, everything was bars, including the walls between cells. The back wall was stone and had shackles attached.
Crell closed the cell door and started to leave.
"Wait!" Brand called. "Don't let him hurt her. Every moment she is with him he is hurting her." Tears spilled from his eyes. "I don't care what happens to me. You have to get her away from him."
Crell's stride broke, but he continued on his way out.
"Fuck!" He screamed and thrashed some more. Tears streamed down his face. Ronnie hadn't said what he had done to her in detail, but Brand could tell how scared she was of him. Every second tore lashes of panic inside him, filled with fear for her.
He sat up and looked around, trying to see if there were any sharp edges he could use to cut through the bindings. He saw the bolt that held the ankle shackles jutting out of the wall. He shimmied over and twisted to rub his wrist restraints against. He couldn't feel any give in it at all. He growled in frustration.
"The bindings are enchanted."
"No shit," he spat, but then actually took note of who spoke to him. "Jon! What the fuck happened?"
Jon was sitting in the cell two cells down, an empty one between them. "I went around the back of the car to get the bags from the boot and then I was in here."
"How did they know we were going to be there?"
Jon just shrugged.
"You know Kainon?" Brand asked him.
Jon shook his head. "He came up after I was under Queen Sevnias service."
"Did you know Prince Thomas? And that he had a daughter?"
