THE REASON
chapter thirty-three ; green balloons
[season six – episode seven ]
THE SKY WAS partly clear that day. There were many clouds, none of which were heavy enough to downpour. They were bright white. Fluffy like candy floss little kids would say. The clouds shaped into numerous different shapes, morphing into anything and everything. Into shapes that didn't exist. Some things never died, and Kloe was appreciative for that.
While the things that lived on the ground, in the water, or in the trees endlessly died, anything that was in the sky did not. Clouds would just get thicker and heavier until it could no longer hold the undying weight of water and cry and cry and cry until the puffiness of the cloud was no more. It would disappear. But not for too long as the water would evaporate back into the air and repeat.
Nothing died in the sky.
Beyond the clouds was an atmosphere. An atmosphere that could only die through humanity or when the sun expanded so largely that it would melt the planet and kill it. Everything died in the end, perhaps. But not clouds. Clouds don't just generate on their own — they need water. And water comes and goes.
Her sister had left the night before while she was sleeping. The only thing she had left behind was a singular sticky note, scribbled words jotted down onto the paper. Don't come looking for me. I'll be back very soon with something you'll love. – Bria.
The folded note rested in her jeans' back pocket. She could feel the thickness push against her skin through the denim. Or maybe she had truly lost her mind and imagined it — like how she was imagining the voices inside of her head that weren't just voices, but screams. It was driving her insane, and it felt as if all those screams burned away small parts of her brain, sweltering away the happiness from her.
Or like a suction hose. As if someone stuck a straw through her ears on each side and sucked every ounce of happiness that could possibly be within her brain. The happiness in her heart, on the other hand, seemed to be pumping away. Her heart rate had slowed down, with every beat it pained her. The joy within her small, underestimated body quickly drained away.
The sky was beautiful. It always distracted her when she heard those same screams. Her ears buzzed and hummed and rang rang rang. Her body couldn't function. Not when seventy-five-percent of her heart was missing. The other fifteen-percent belonged to her brother, Zayn. He used to have the other half, but the moment Brianna entered her life, she made sure to share it with them.
God help her if something happened to Zayn.
...
Glenn threw a bunch of questions Brianna's way. She wanted to answer, she truly did. And she would, eventually. However, she needed to find Enid. Now that she knew Glenn was okay and unharmed, she had to make sure her friend was too.
