"Are you going to answer my question?" I ask slowly. I don't know if it was the right question but after thinking about it I was tired of beating around the bush.
"What's your question?" He sighs and swipes his face. It sounds more like a groan but I ignore it. He hands me the bag with my stuff in it and we start to eat.
"Did you hit her?"
"What do you want me to say?" He takes a bite of his sandwich.
"I want you to speak your truth."
"Yes Mari I hit her, I'm not proud of that moment, but I'm not that person anymore so I don't want to talk about it. Happy?" He goes back to eating his food.
We sit in silence as we eat and we stay in silence as we walk back across the street to school. We go our separate ways and finish the school day. I don't see him in the sea of people as the day ends and I don't see him during the group huddle after school.
I stay with YaYa since Malachi is coming to pick her up. I ask her about her girlfriend and we talk about them until she changes the subject. We talk about the looks at the latest fashion shows and the movie premieres until Kai pulls up. He gets out the car and comes to greet us.
"Titi que lo que mi vida." He greets her with a hug and they start to slap box. It's the cutest thing and today they're lowkey matching. They both have on khaki cargo pants and a red hoodie. Yana is wearing an Aelfric Eden hoodie and Kai is wearing a Denim Tears hoodie. I love their relationship and I wish I was back in Chicago with my family. I miss my cousins and my friends. I yawn and Kai turns to me.
"What's up mama." He smiles and I wave. He walks up to me and we hug for a little bit. Out of the corner of my eye I see Zae. It looks like he's talking to someone but when I turn he's just sitting on the steps staring at me. I wave and he waves back.
"Yo need a ride?" Malachi yells out to him. I whip my head towards Kai so quickly. I turn back to Zae and he continues to stare.
"I don't need anything from you my boy." Zae yells back to him. Kai just laughs and shakes his head. "Gangsta."
"Ya' ready?" He turns to us and asks as he opens the car door.
"Yo let me talk to you real quick muddy." Zae yells out to Kai as he walks up to us. He waves for Kai to follow him. I look to Yaya confused and she shrugs her shoulders. I look between Kai and Zae and watch as they walk down the block and around the corner. Me and Yaya sit in the car with the doors open so we can try to hear them.
We agreed that if we start to hear yelling we would go and stop them from fighting or break up the fight if they were fighting. After what feels like forever, they come back. I check for new scars or bruises on both of them but I find nothing. Kai walks around to the drivers seat and Zae walks past the car towards the train station.
"What did he..." Tay starts to get out before Kai cuts her off.
"Get in the car." Kai says firmly. Yaya gets in the front seat and I get in the back.
It doesn't look like anything happened to him and the energy seems fine. He's playing Who Wants Smoke?? by Nardo Wick and the car is jumping but there's a look on his face that let's me know that there is something obviously bothering him. We drive for a while and he drops Tay off first.
They hug before she gets out the car and he tells me to get in the front. When I get to the passenger seat he pulls off from in front of Yana's house before I can put on my seat belt. It's quiet in the car for a bit as we listen to music. I turn to him as we get closer back to my house.
"What did Isaiah want to talk about?" I ask him
He thinks about it for a bit. "Nothing just wanted to catch up randomly." He shrugs his shoulders.
