At home
After School
______________
Something very weird happened today: someone talked to me ninth period, and not just any someone; the girl kind of someone: Mellie Danzinger. I would've ignored her like I do everyone else (and I really should've), but I've kinda maybe sorta had a little bit of a crush on her since the fifth grade. Who cares that the only subject of our conversations since she started talking to me a few days ago have mainly been about my family And every little thing we don't like to talk about? I felt today had to be different, so I let her talk. She asked me what I was writing and I told her my Momma was making me write a journal for my thirteenth birthday. Then she asked some funny questions about my birthday. This is kind of how it went:
"Are you doing anything special for your birthday?"
"No."
"Are you moving?"
"No."
"Then why are you stopping school two days before it ends? Kind of peculiar, don't ya think?"
"Um...," I stalled trying to come up with an excuse. "My grandpa's coming over today, and my momma wants us to spend his first few days here with, um, with all the family."
"Oh, that's nice. Y'know, the ground's always funky when your grandfather's over."
"You wouldn't know that."
"I would if I was on the bus when it comes around, silly."
"Oh. Right." Whoops. "What did you mean... 'funky'?"
"Well, it's kinda like a real mellow earthquake." That's Grampa Bomba alright, I thought.
--He used to be able to move the ground like you would move Play-Do. He's older now so making way for rivers is kind of out of the question.--
"I've never felt anything," I said. "And I live with him."
"Oh. I guess it's just me then." --I thought she was going to leave me alone after that-- "But there was that one time when the bus broke down in front of your house. And just that day before, you'd said out;d that your brother Rocket--"
--And after that little comment I may have gone overboard. Rocket had been really sick that day, and he couldn't control his savvy at all. (I mean, less than usual if that's possible.) Also, that happened almost two years ago. How would she remember that? Why would she remember that? Was she stalking me? My family? I just couldn't take it anymore.--
"I didn't say anything about Rocket!" I stood up and yelled and I could immediately feel all eyes in the classroom turn to Mellie and me.
She looked surprised then determined. She stood up too. "Yes you did! Your exact words were, 'Rocket really isn't feeling well. I think he's going to--'"
"I wasn't even talking to you!"
--I was talking to Missy--
Then the bell rang. I looked at her for a second then quickly walked out the door. I tried to lose her in the crowd of the rest of the school, 'cause lucky for me, she was still carrying her always heavy backpack for some reason. Not so lucky for me, she somehow still caught up with me before I could make it to our bus.
I asked her what she wanted and she said she was sorry. I asked her what her problem was with my family and then she got weird again:
"I--we--my," she stammered. I told her never mind and started to leave. I heard an "Oof!" and Mellie grabbed onto my arm. Like really grabbed on.
"Ow! What are doing?!" I yelled. Her backpack had fallen off and she looked scareder than a deer at gunpoint. She took a deep breath and looked up at me, "My family and yours, we're not different."
"What's that supposed to mean?" She really was holding on tight. And it really was starting to hurt. Mellie looked disappointed in who knows what, but she still looked scared. I was starting to get worried. And I really was worried when I began to hear her whispering, "Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god." I didn't know what to do. I put a hand on her shoulder. "Mellie?"
"Just get my backpack, Fish," I barely heard her quavering voice say. When I did and she put it on, she relaxed. Then she looked at me with what seemed to me like all the hate in the world. "God, Fisher! Why can't you just get anything that you see right in front of you?!" Mellie stalked all the way to the back of the bus and I sat next to Missy, near the middle with Samson sitting behind us. Missy'd seen everything.
"What was that all about?" she asked.
"Nothing. Don't talk to me."
When we got home, Missy was singing Fish got in a fight with his girlfriend, Fish got in a fight with his girlfriend. I told her to shut up and I told Momma I didn't want to go to school tomorrow. I didn't hear if she agreed 'cause I locked myself in my room.
I've been in here for two hours. Momma said I was being rude to Missy and the rest of the family.
I let Samson in a few minutes ago; well, I let him the doorway.
I'd stood there and said, "Samson? What do you--"
And then he crashed into me with a hug. Samson does that sometimes. He just touches someone and they feel calmer. I don't know how he does it, but I sure do feel a lot better.
That's it for today; Momma's calling me in for supper.
Two more days till my birthday. Just two more days.
