ADELINE

Yesterday morning was perfectly pleasant, but it all went down hill from there.

Braxton had dragged me back to the pack house, where I sat through the unwelcoming glances and stares of the pack members who still haven't seemed to come to term with the fact that a witch was now their Luna, all while he conducted a meeting of sorts.

Shortly after we got there, my phone pinged with a message from Caroline. I remember the pit forming in my stomach and the guilty feeling that settled there — recalling my lie to her. She was so nice, just asking me how I was doing and when or if I'd be coming back to work since it had been almost a week since she heard from me. In all honesty, I had completely forgotten about the job that I left on a whim while trying to run from Braxton.

I needed to give her an answer though, instead of just continuing on with my lie. I responded to her with a partial truth, I was really sorry, but I wouldn't be able to return to work anytime soon.

Admittedly after that, I had tuned out the sound of Braxton's voice as he spoke to his pack, deeming it unimportant werewolf things. However, in hindsight, I should have been listening. The memory of when we arrived back home yesterday plays in my mind.

"Go pack a bag, we're gonna be there for a few days." Braxton said as we stepped through the front door.

My brows knit together in confusion and I glanced up at him while he removed his shoes. His eyes searched mine, matching my confusion, clearly not understanding why I didn't know what he was talking about.

"We're you not listening to anything I was saying during the meeting?"

I took my shoes off and hung my coat up before I turned back to face him. "No." I admitted.

He had let out a deep sigh, most likely out of frustration. "We're going to California, Elijah wants to meet you."

Elijah— as in Elijah Saar, the same one he'd been seeing when he was gone for those two days.

"Why?" I questioned.

"If we go to war Adeline, he's going to be helping us. He wants to meet the person he'd be fighting for."

His words made my heart hammer in my chest, I wouldn't let a war ensue over me. I needed to think of my own plan, my own way of getting myself out of this situation, so no one else needed to be involved especially another pack.

I gulped, not knowing how to respond, before settling on a simple "Okay."

After that, I packed a small suitcase with just enough clothes for the three days that Braxton said we'd be gone for. We had dinner and I went to bed earlier than usual since we planning on leaving around six in the morning.

I dragged myself to get dressed when my alarm went off at 5:40am this morning and once I was done, I filled Ember's bowls of food and water to the brim. I murmured a quick spell over them, just to ensure they would stay full for her the entire time we were gone. I then gave her a kiss on the head, and Braxton and I make our way to his truck for the ten hour car ride.

He tosses our bags in the back seat before we climb into the vehicle. My eyes shift to the rear view mirror as the familiar sight of Kai's truck comes into view. As if reading my thoughts, Braxton says, "Kai and Nora are coming with us."

"Okay." I respond simply and then silence falls over us, until a question arises in my head. "Why is Nora coming?"

Kai make sense, with him being Braxton's beta, but Nora?
