                              ADELINE

It was him.

We held eye contact and I watched as faint clouds formed around his snout with each exhale. The temperature had been dipping into mid 30s now that autumn was here, but I doubted he felt any sort of chill with how thick his black fur was.

I was at a loss of what to do. Conflicting thoughts filled my head. Should I go confront him and ask why he followed me? Should I simply go to bed? I knew he had no intentions of harming me. However, I didn't know how well I'd sleep knowing he was just a mere 20 feet away with only the wall of my house separating us.

The protection spell I had cast over the house was no use to me right now considering it only serves to protect. And in this case, I wasn't in need of protection from the wolf who was clearly not here to hurt me. If he had wanted to hurt me, he would have done so when we had first met. My thoughts went back to when he had whispered "mine" in the alleyway. I had a strong feeling that we were mates, which made my mind race with a million questions. It really was unheard of for werewolves to be mated to witches or vampires.

However, my thoughts were interrupted when the wolf took a sudden step forward. I suddenly felt very vulnerable in just the t-shirt with nothing underneath. It reached almost mid thigh, but I still didn't have underwear on. The wolf took another step forward and reactively the word "claudo" left my lips. The brown curtain that was once pushed to the side of the window promptly covered it, shielding the wolf's view into my bedroom.

I could hear a growl from outside, but chose to ignore it. I quickly grabbed a pink pair of underwear from a drawer in the closet and pulled them on. Feeling slightly more modest I climbed into bed after flipping off the light switch next to the doorway. Ember jumped into the bed with me only a moment later and curled up my feet.

My heart beat loudly in my chest. I was anticipating something more to happen. But nothing did. I could sense him still outside of my house, which oddly gave me a sense of comfort. After waiting a few more minutes, I decided to go to sleep. Knowing I would not be able to fall asleep on my own anytime soon, I whispered the word "dormio" which pulled me into a slumber.

I was awoken by Ember meowing at me from the floor next to the bed. I groaned softly. I was not ready to be awake yet. I blinked as my eyes focused on her. She sat upright with her tail slightly swaying behind her, looking at me with her bright blue eyes letting me know she was hungry.

I glanced over to my nightstand and as I tapped on the screen of my phone, it lit up allowing me to read the time 9:43am. I had slept much longer than usual thanks to the sleep spell. Groaning again I pushed the large beige duvet off of my body. The air hit my exposed skin, causing goosebumps to crawl up my legs. I walked over to the window and moved the curtain aside. Sunlight shone through in an instant, cascading light into my room. I blinked again allowing my eyes to settle on the forest. The tall trees stood alone. He was gone.

I felt a slight twinge of sadness but refused to let it overcome me. It was probably best to try and completely forget about last night. Walking out of the bedroom, I made my way into the kitchen. After filling Ember's bowl, her meows promptly stopped. I decided to quickly do the dishes that I had been ignoring.

Once they were all clean and drying on the rack, I made my way back towards my closet. I settled on a pair of light wash skinny jeans with some fraying at the bottom and a basic black sweater. I then lightly curled my hair in front of the bathroom mirror until it looked presentable and applied a thin coat of mascara.

My mother was the one who had taught me how to curl my hair. Her hair was the exact same color as mine. I used to dye it various different colors during my teenage years, but since her passing the resemblance made me feel more connected to her and I haven't touched it in 6 years. It was reaching my waist and I made a mental note about how I should probably get a hair cut soon.
