Chicago Medical Center, Chicago Illinois
The shift wasn't overly busy but also not slow, which left Sam constantly doing something. She didn't mind in all honestly, it kept her busy so she wasn't counting down the hours until her shift finished. Sam made her way into treatment 2 where a middle aged man was dropped off by a couple of paramedics.
Sam made her way into the treatment room with the syringes she'd be using to get a few blood samples for a blood panel Will ordered for their patient. The man didn't say much to her as she introduced herself and explained what she was going to do.
She unwrapped the first syringe and made her way over to the man who was sitting on the edge of the bed now in a hospital gown. Sam made her way over to him going to take the first vial of blood. Before she could even get the needle in his vein the man started freaking out. "All night everyone's been hovering, always hovering, always watching - Sir I'm gonna need you to calm down please," Sam said taking a slight step back.
"ALWAYS HOVERING, ALWAYS WATCHING," he said louder as he stood up towering over Sam who felt her heart start beating in her ears out of fear. "Sir, I can give you some space but you need to calm down," Sam said trying to sound stern but her voice was shaky. The man sat down on the edge of the bed again and Sam let out a shaky breath as she turned and put the open syringe on the tray she brought in and covered the tray before going to exit the room.
"always hovering, always watching," the man said to himself on the bed as Sam made her way to the sliding glass door of the treatment room. "ALWAYS HOVERING, ALWAYS WATCHING," His voice boomed through the small space causing Sam to turn and look at the man. He was up and off the bed within a split second and running at her.
Sam went to back up and leave the room but between how fast the man was and her internal panic she wasn't fast enough. The next thing she knew Sam felt herself flying through the air, her small frame collided with the glass sliding door with so much force the glass shattered on impact. Sending Sam crashing to the floor in the hallway outside the treatment room, she landed in broken glass, her head hit the nurse's station with a loud thud.
Everything went dark for what felt like a moment, Sam could hear people talking but their voices sounded like they were at one end of a long hallway and she was standing on the other end. "Sam? Sam, can you hear me?" Will's voice was the last thing she heard.
Beep... Beep... Beep
Sam could hear the steady sound of a heart monitor as she moved only to let out a groan of pain in the process. Her entire body ached as she forced her eyes open noticing she was lying in a hospital bed in one of the ED treatment rooms. She noticed Dr. Hayes and Dr. Rhodes the moment she opened her eyes.
Sam was confused, what happened? she asked herself as she went to push herself to sit up causing another groan of pain. The sound caused Savanna and Connor to turn toward Sam noticing she was awake. "Take it easy, you took a pretty bad fall," Savanna told her only confusing Sam more. "What happened?" she finally asked causing them to exchange a look of confusion. "Our patient had a psychiatric break and threw you through one of the glass doors," Will said from the doorway where he was standing along with Jay, Ms. Goodwin, and Dr. Charles.
Sam paused at her older brother's words as everything came flooding back, "We managed to get the glass out of your injuries, you had to get 20 stitches between the cut on your forehead, and arms," Dr. Rhodes said "We're also going to get a Head and CT scan to rule out any head injury and concussion," Dr. Hayes adds.
"We'll give you a minute before we take her up to neurology," Dr. Rhodes said before he made his way out of the room but Dr. Hayes stayed behind. "How are you feeling?" Savanna asked Sam as Will and Jay walked into the room along with Ms. Goodwin and Dr. Charles. "Like I tried to fly through a glass door," Sam replied. "Do you want to press charges?" Jay asked her changing the subject after a moment. Sam shook her head no, "As long as he gets the psychiatric help he needs no," She replied causing Jay to nod looking at Dr. Charles. "Then he's all yours," Jay said as Dr. Charles and Ms. Goodwin left the room.
"Sam I'm really sorry about what you went through today, and if you want to talk or not talk... I'm all ears," Dr. Charles said before he left. "Thanks," Sam said more to herself, "Sam I want you to take the rest of the shift off, and depending on what Dr. Hayes says your off work until you're cleared. Would you like me to call Cheif Boden?" she asked from the doorway, "I can give Boden a call while you get your CT and Head scan," Will offered as Sam nodded.
Maggie returned to the room with a wheelchair and took Sam up to neurology to get her scans with Dr. Hayes. "How's your head feel?" Savannah asked on the elevator, "A bit of a headache, but nothing I can't manage," Sam replied as the elevator doors opened and she wheeled Sam down the hall.
In the ED Will got off the phone with Boden letting him know Sam was injured at Med. She's okay but she'd need to be cleared for shift. It took a little over half an hour for the scans and Dr. Hayes to return Sam to the treatment room in the ED.
Sam got up from the wheelchair and Will helped her back on the bed. "thanks," Sam said softly to Will. "So what's the damage?" Jay asked her once Sam was back in bed. "Sam certainly has a mild concussion, between your last concussion and this one I'd like to keep you here overnight under observation. If all goes well I'll have you discharged in the morning and you can go home and get some rest," Dr. Hayes said "Thank you, Dr. Hayes," Sam said. "I've gotta go check on a few other patients, Maggie should be by to move you upstairs shortly. I'll come check in on you in a bit," Dr. Hayes said before she left the room.
Sam let out a sigh laying back as Will turned the lights off in the room, thankfully since they were starting to make her growing headache worse. That's when she remembered she should probably message Luke and let him know she wasn't going to be able to make their coffee date after shift. Sam pulled her phone out of her pocket noticing she was still in scrubs instead of a hospital gown.
The moment she unlocked the device Will pulled it out of her hands, "Sam, you can't be using anything with screens it's only going to make your concussion worse," her eldest brother said. Sam sighed, "I know, but- Not buts Sam, no phone, no TV, it's the same procedure as last time," Jay added agreeing with Will. "Okay, but you're gonna have to tell Luke I won't be able to go on our coffee date after work then since I can't use my phone," Sam replied.
"You have a coffee date?" Will asked surprised by the news, "Had," Sam replied with a sigh. "I can let him know if that's what you want," Jay replied as Sam nodded. "Just. Don't mention- I won't say anything about this morning," Jay replied already knowing where Sam was going. "Thanks," Sam said as Jay sent a message to Luke letting him know 'Some family stuff came up and Sam wouldn't be able to make it tonight'
It didn't take Luke long to reply to the message, "There," Jay said. "He knows... is he mad?" Sam asked him. "No, I told him some family stuff came up and you wouldn't be able to make it tonight. He said it's alright, if you need anything let me know and tell Sam I said Hey," Jay replied reading the message word for word.
