"Stupid is knowing the truth, seeing the truth, but still believing the lies," he told her as he fixed the telescope to look at the sky.
"You're not stupid, Serkan. You're one of the brightest people I know," she informed him.
"Baba doesn't seem to agree with you. They never planned to have me, you know? He said it to her this evening. I was coming to let them know I'd be staying outdoors overnight to watch the comet, and I heard them arguing. I mean, I'd seen all of the signs. I knew that he despised me. He has never shown any inclination to spend time with me. It just hurts to be validated. Like a small part of me still hoped that I was wrong...." Serkan added morosely.
"I don't know what to say to make you feel better. I don't think anything can," Eda said, grabbing his hand and drawing circles on his palm.
"You can promise to beat my dad," Serkan teased.
"You'll never let me live that down, won't you, Serkan?"
"You bit the kid's shin!"
"I was six years old, and Emir was a buttface," she laughed.
Serkan was now smiling at her, which left her at ease.
"You think Fey will wake for the comet?" Serkan wondered as he poked his friend, who was fast asleep.
"I think he's just here for my benefit so my dad doesn't blow a blood vessel," Eda said sheepishly.
"Ugh, don't remind me...."
Eda scrunched her nose, "Whatever do you mean, Serkan Bolat?"
"I've got to go out with this girl... her dad is friends with my dad. Deniz something-something. She's so touchy."
"Poor Serkan Bolat, being attacked by hot girls. As if you hated that. I think you've dated every girl in school except for me," Eda said with a hint of jealousy.
"If there is any girl in school I give time to, it is you, Eda," Serkan reminded her. "Plus, Emre and Emir have been fighting to see which will take you to prom."
"I don't think I want to go to prom and hang out with either of those bozos."
"Just imagine how enjoyable it'd be," Serkan suggested sarcastically.
"Serkan..." Eda said a few moments.
Serkan looked at her.
"If Alptekin cannot see what a good son you are, what a good person you are, then the one who misses out on you is him," Eda grabbed Serkan's hand again shyly and tightened her hold around his fingers.
