Nadia Thompson
I zipped up my black and silver sequined Victoria's Secret PINK hoodie before stepping into my PINK black and white slides. I knelt down in front of the floor length mirror fixing my hair. I decided to just leave it down. My phone vibrated and dinged on the bed. I jogged over to the bed grabbing it, it showed the text I had been awaiting for what felt like hours.
YG(2:56am) - I'm outside.
I quickly grabbed my cross body purse placing it over my head and onto my shoulders. I made sure I had everything I needed before picking up my phone walking out of the room closing the door behind me and tiptoeing down the spiral staircase. I haven't snuck out of the house since I was sixteen years old, trying to be fast. My mom ended that shit real fast.
The sound of the TV could be heard from in the living room. Somebody must've been up. The way Dijon's house was set up you had to walk past the living room in order to go to the foyer. I quickly grabbed my purse in my hands with it still on my shoulder not wanting it to bounce around when I ran past the living room. I ran past the living room stumbling a bit because of these damn slides.
"Nadia?" I heard Dijon ask.
"Huh?" I asked rolling my eyes and back tracking into the living room. I'm sure if I would've had on shoes I would've made it.
"Lemme talk to you real fast." He waved me over to him as he sat up on the couch.
"About?" I questioned slowly walking over to the couch. He patted the cushion next to him wanting me to sit. I rejected his offer hoping he get the hint that I was in a rush.
"YG!" I furrowed my eyebrows at him in confusion.
"What about him?"
"Y'all been spending a lot of time--"
"He's a friend, he's helping me cope with mommy's death. He's doing a good job if I do say so myself." I shrugged my shoulders.
"Don't let it go pass the friendship stage Nanee."
"It's not. Is that all? I feel like we're having this talk fathers and daughters have before they leave the house with a boy."
"Good, I'm just makin sure you straight. Even if that's my day uno, I won't play about you. Keep it cordial."
"Okay." I sighed slightly rolling my eyes.
"Ight don't be doin nothin you ain't got no business doin."
"Such as?" I questioned.
"Bye!" He laughed adjusting Kauner in his arms bouncing her softly. I pecked her forehead and Dijon's cheek before making a beeline for the front door.
"You straight? You ain't said nun since you got in the car." Keenon said as we drove down the highway, we were the only ones on the road besides a few other cars. One Man Can Change The World softly played throughout the car's speaker. I cleared my throat before responding.
"Yeah, just thinking about my mom. I miss her so much. That's bizarre to me how someone can be here one second and then gone the next." I sniffled letting the tears roll down my cheeks as I looked out of the window at the scenery we passed. My mother's death hit me hard late nights, early mornings we used to stay up and converse about everything under the sun. We had our tendencies to be messy and nosey especially her talking about most of her co-workers and the church members. It's almost as if Keenon was now her ears for my late night gossiping.
"It is doe." He mumbled. Sometimes I felt as if I was being selfish all I did was vent and cry to him he rarely spoke about his mother.
"Just like you're here for me, I'm here for you." He glanced over at me before putting his focus back on the road.
