THE SAME COIN

The Yu twins were perhaps the most famous noble siblings besides the crown prince and princess. Their antics and their talents had swept Byulran since their birth thirteen years ago. The younger sister excelled in matters of business and was a notable socialite, while her brother captured the sentiments of the upper class with his music and writing. Their father had been quick to offer up their abilities to the crown prince. Often referred to as the Golden Twins, said to be like two sides of the same coin, they brought in wealth worthy of their namesake. A flashy and adorable sister, a muted and enthralling brother. Having been born to such rich and influential parents, it was impossible that the twins would not succeed at any task before them. Or so it seemed.

"I told you not to burn it!" ZaiZai whined, pushing her brother as he stared at the charred paper before him.

"How was I supposed to know your beloved Crown Prince would leave her a secret message?" RanRan huffed, crossing his arms as he nudged the ashes with the tip of his shoe. Yes, the refined and infallible Golden Yu twins, indeed. Chaesung sighed as she watched the children bicker, taking a seat in the corner.

"Shut up! He's not my Crown Prince. He's everyone's Crown Prince-"

"Yeah, but you're the one who has a cru-" ZaiZai slapped a hand over her brother's mouth, her rosy lips twisted in a pout. Chaesung pinched the bridge of her nose, sighing loud enough to catch their attention.

"That's enough, you two. If it was a message His Highness entrusted to the two of you, it must not have been that important. That or he gave it to you another way. Twin proof," Chaesung snickered, uncrossing her legs and standing with a yawn. RanRan pulled away from his sister, fake gagging as he rubbed his mouth.

"Well he did say he was leaving the capital soon. Again," ZaiZai muttered, her long green sleeves fluttering as she swung her arms back and forth.

"Do you know when?"

"A little more than two weeks from now," RanRan answered, digging in a large chest. Chaesung tapped her chin as she paced the room. ZaiZai breezed past her to join her brother as he began to pluck at the strings of his pipa.

"I don't like that song. Play another one," ZaiZai ordered, kicking her feet in the air. Despite rolling his eyes, her brother immediately began to pluck out a more cheerful tune. Chaesung bit her lip as she debated what the prince's message could have been. Most likely, she would be expected to return before his departure from the palace. That left her with only a week more at the camp to gather information on the rebels. This also meant leaving the Yu twins without her protection for the latter half of their stay. But perhaps she could take measures to ensure their safety in her absence. She clapped her hands together, capturing the twins' attention.

"What do you two think about putting on a little performance with me?" The twins shared a look, matching grins stretching across their faces. "I'll take that as a yes, then."

The rest of the week passed by smoothly, as Chaesung managed to be part of the group assigned to look after the Yu twins' needs while they stayed at the camp. She continued their nightly meetings, and would transcribe the rebel intel she gathered while they discussed their plans. Chaesung would need an excuse to leave the camp soon, and the twins presented her with the perfect opportunity.

"Hurry up, or we'll be late," Sulhee watched Chaesung roll up her quilt with her arms crossed, her velvet lips twisted into a frown. Unfortunately, Sulhee had also been assigned to the group and had taken to following Chaesung around. The spy was under no illusion that it wasn't because of her earlier slip up at the woodshed. While her presence greatly annoyed Chaesung due to her inability to move undetected, she'd become used to the woman's brash personality. She also decided that, all things considered, the servant proved a beneficial ally in the camp. Due to their closeness, Chaesung managed to brush shoulders with several high-ranking officers in the camp, as well as the commander. Those encounters led her to believe that the rebels' corruption only infiltrated the lowest levels of the camp.
