"Who's this Kylie? Would you like to introduce me," my dad spoke loud enough that Taylor could hear.
For a couple of seconds I decided whether what I was about to do was the best idea. I wanted my dad to be in my life.... Maybe I should just lie and play along.
He's lying. It's not real.
I pushed all hope back.
"Stop lying."
My fathers features immediately changed. His face forming into a impressive fake confused expression.
"What do you mean Kylie?" He spoke slowly.
"You know exactly what I mean dad. I know what your doing. You know exactly who he is, this is your plan remember? All-"
"What are you saying Kylie? You don't know what your talking about!" My father said, his voice raising slightly over the chatter of the cafe. I noticed Taylor was serving the customers and ushering them out politely, we didn't need this to be gossiped about.
"Don't interrupt me. All this time you were lying to me dad, your finding information for the reporters. What happened to trying to rebuild this relationship? Was that all just a lie to get me to open up to you?"
"Kylie, listen to me, youve got it all wrong."
"Tell me what ive got wrong because by not denying what ive just said has told me that its true."
"Kylie, I didnt want to do any of it, it was my last resort. Im sorry."
He admitted it. The words had me recoiling from him. My eyes stung with unshed tears, it hurt so much. My brain started churning and suddenly I wanted to know everything.
"I saw you, the other night talking to another man. Thats the reporter isn't it?"
"Yes, they contacted me about a month ago. First I turned them away saying that I hadn't seen you in years... then my company lost all its investments. The workers we had trusted had been a scam. I was lost Kylie, I could literally do nothing."
"Thats gives you no excuse to turn against your own family."
"Come on Kylie... we're not really a family a we? I haven't seen you for years. Yes, I'm your father, and I've made some mistakes, couldn't you just make this small sacrifice?"
I ignored his ridiculous questions, why would I ever tell this man anything about me or Taylor, I would never tell him anything ever again.
"Do you regret it?" I asked.
"I had no choice" He said, he hung his head, he wouldn't even look at me.
"Look at me" my voice was unsteady and now full of bitter rage.
He looked at me, his eyes were sad, lonely and helpless. For a moment I felt sorry for him, but then I remembered what he'd done.
"Now answer my question... do you regret it?" I said, the silvery tone to my voice now gone, instead it was void of all emotion.
"No, I needed the money." My father said, he looked ashamed.
I felt like someone had punched me in the chest and winded me. For a moment I couldn't regain my bearings and I felt myself slightly stumble on my own two feet, then my vision went clear and I felt Taylor's arms around me.
"You're a cheat and liar. I dont want to ever see your face again. You will never be my father." My voice cracked at the end and I walked away from him, Taylor's arms loosened and he walked with me. My fathers expression was pained and I saw his eyes were full of tears like mine.
