Prologue

THE PLAN WAS ALMOST RUINED by a fit of giggles, but fortunately they were quickly suppressed. Watching Gale prepare breakfast, she waited for the perfect opportunity.

Pulling out the phone, then proceeded to go to the security app and disarmed the alarm.

"Systems disarmed," Rang throughout the penthouse.

"Tatum." Gale's panicked voice sounded from the kitchen. "Tatum!"

Hurried footsteps continued to get closer. The second she passed by the hall closet, the door flew open. Ghostface jumped out, wielding the infamous curved bladed hunting knife. Gale jumped back, letting out a shrilling scream. Ghostface thrusted the knife forward, aiming for her side.

Tatum could no longer contain her laughter, the way her mom's eyes almost popped out of her pushed her over the edge. She fell to the floor, the laughter becoming to much to stand, literally.

Her mom reached down and snatched the mask off, Gale adorned a deep frown along with furrowed brows that screamed unimpressed, "Tatum Rose Riley that is not okay, you almost gave me a heart attack." Clearly by looking at her, there was no reasoning with her right now, the girl was red in the face and unable to breathe from laughing so hard, "Come to the kitchen when you're more reasonable."

Once Tatum collected herself off the floor and changed, (she'd laughed so hard she peed herself) and joined her mom in the kitchen.

She leaned against the kitchen island, watching her mom angrily chop some onions.

"Why are you so mad? It was funny."

Gale slammed the knife down onto the wooden cutting board, causing it to get stuck, "It's insensitive."

"Didn't you once say that 'you have to check your conscience at the door because, we're not here to be loved."

She inhaled deeply, holding it for seven seconds before exhaling slowly. Gale loved her daughter, loved her. More than anything else in the world, and there wasn't anything she wouldn't do for her.

But god, did Tatum push all her buttons and past her limit.

"Yes, in journalism." She stressed, "Besides, I want you to be better than me, way better." She snatched the knife from her daughter's hand and pressed the blade against her palm, watching the knife retracted into the handle when she pressed down on it, "Really?"

Tatum shrugged, "I obviously wasn't going to use a real knife."

"Thanks for loving me enough to not use a real one." Gale sarcastically joked, tossing the toy to the side.
