Chapter ThreeJumping Nets and Racket Shields
————————————————
SIX HOURS LATER, Tatum was forced awake by the bright florescent lights of the plane cabin. She pulled the black hoodie up to her face, trying to get away from the light.
The pilot announced their arrival to San Francisco and everyone stood up to grab their carry on— Tatum didn't understand that. Everyone was still going to wait the same amount of time, actually it'd make everyone take longer to get off the plane.
So, she chose to wait in her seat and wait out the crowd.
Tatum pulled out her stupid kid phone from her pocket and checked the time. 3:27 am, California time. With New York being three hours ahead, meant her mom should be waking up about now. Reluctantly, she pressed her mom's contact and held the phone up to her ear.
The phone was answered up on the first ring, "Tatum, good. You're actually using the phone."
She rolled her eyes, "It was either that or not call you, but then you'd just get madder."
"You got there okay?" Her mom ignored her comment, "Did your dad find you?"
"Mom, the plane just landed and people are acting like dumbasses trying to get their carry on's at the same time." Tatum guessed she must've been a little too loud because a group of people around her looked at her, they all looked offended, "Like I'm wrong."
"Text me when you find your father."
"Mom, I'm not ten anymore." Tatum groaned out, "You don't need every little update from me anymore."
Tatum heard her mom scoff the phone, "I'm your mother, I always need updates."
"Fine, you'll get updates but I'm hanging up now. I love you."
"I love you, too. Be careful—"
Tatum cut her off, "I know."
"Listen to your dad—"
"I know, mom. Goodbye." With that, Tatum hung up the phone before her mom could get another word in.
She got up from her seat now that the crowd thinned out, reached up to the cubby and yanked her carry on out. The closer she got to the exit, the slower people walked and the worse her impulsive thoughts got. (she really wanted to push the little kid in front of her, who was sticking his younger out at her, to the side and out of her way)
But that'd be frowned upon.
So, she quickly pushed past the kid and his mother, who were blocking the entire aisle as the desperate woman tried to wrangle her three other kids, as she passed by the little boy Tatum stuck her tongue at him. Feeling the slightest bit of satisfaction, she walked off the plane with a pleased smile on her face.
