Chapter Five

Familiar Faces

IT'S A QUICK CAR RIDE TO THE HOSPITAL, but even then it's not fast enough when Tatum was forced to sit next to Amber who couldn't stop complaining about Artemis.

The raven haired girl groaned out, again, "Can you get your mutt off of me."

Tatum rolled her eyes, her dog was curled up at her feet, "She's not even touching you, Amber. You're just being annoying."

"Oh look, guys. There's the hospital." Chad called out from the driver's seat, hoping to stop their bickering.

Chad, ever the mediator.

Once he found a parking spot, they all climbed out the car.

Before they could even take a single step toward the hospital Amber just had to open her mouth.

"Tatum, you're not seriously taking that dog inside the hospital."

Tatum's urge to get violent was growing with each word the girl spoke, "She's a service dog, Amber. She's fine."

And Tatum wasn't exactly lying when she said that. After Woodsboro's police department retired her dad, they also retired Artemis. Her dad took her in and trained her for when he had a bad day, and the pain was too strong for him to even get out of bed.

But Artemis wasn't 'officially' considered a service dog.

"Yeah right." Amber scoffed, "What services?"

"She was a police dog, duh."

Mindy got in between them, "Guys, stop. Tara is waiting for us. Amber chill about the dog."

They get inside and go to the front desk, where Wes asked for Tara's room number. Before they could head for the elevators, the nurse stopped the group.

"You kids can't go up there with a dog, there's sick people here."

   "Told you." Amber whispered.

Tatum ignored her and focused on the nurse, "She's a service dog."

The nurse was still unconvinced, "Where's her vest?"

"Service dogs don't legally have to wear a vest." Tatum responded.

   "Are you even disabled?"

Tatum faked a frown, "You legally can't ask me that."

After a moment of debate, the woman relented, "Whatever, but if it poops inside you will be escorted off the premises."

The blonde blankly stared back at the nurse, "Okay."

They filed into the elevator, and eventually got to Tara's room, the group of teens entered the girl's room.

Being the last one to enter the room, Tatum closed the door behind her and walked further into the room. She was taken back by how small (smaller than usual) Tara seemed in the bed.

A gasp came from the hospitalized girl when she saw the blonde walk through the door.

   "Tatum?! You're here?"

Tatum nodded and pushed her way through the group to get to Tara's bedside.

"Yeah, I landed in San Fran yesterday and we drove here this morning

"Sure you did." Amber muttered which Tatum chose to ignore the comment.

Tatum sat down next to Tara and gently engulfed her in a hug, "You feeling better?"
