Two days flew by in a whirlwind, leading up to the day they would present their poems to everyone. Although (Y/n) found it relatively easy to choose a topic, she struggled with settling on one. Eventually, she settled on her feelings toward the ocean and began to write. While it wasn't a monumental piece, it captured her heartfelt sentiments.
(Y/n) settled into her seat, observing as most of her classmates presented their poems. Despite feeling that she could have done better upon hearing the others' performances, she brushed off any self-doubt and stepped forward to present her own poem to the class.
"Beneath the expansive sky,
the ocean stretches infinitely.
Its waves, a rhythmic pulse,
soothe the soul with each motion.
Hues shift endlessly,
creating a timeless scene of wonder and mystery.
In its embrace, worries dissolve, and tranquility reigns.
The dance of light and shadow reveals the ocean's boundless beauty,
a world unseen yet deeply felt." (Y/n) read.
After she finished reading, the class clapped. However, she didn't bother to scan the room to see who was clapping and who wasn't. "That was really good, (L/n). Short, yet shows promise. Oceans are really magnificent when you think about it, an A indeed!" Miss Keiko stated as (Y/n) headed back to her seat.
After that, two other students read their poems, followed by applause then then the teacher called out, "Itoshi, you're up."
(Y/n) was curious about what his topic would be.
Sae Itoshi cleared his throat as his gaze lingered upon hers, soft and unwavering, tracing the contours of her face.
He looked at the paper he held in his hand, as he started to recite what he wrote.
"I would recognize you in another lifetime,
entirely in different bodies, different times.
And I would love you in all this
until the very last star in the sky burns out into oblivion.
Even if our paths diverge, across galaxies far and wide,
In every iteration of existence, you'd still be by my side.
With each new dawn and every twilight's kiss,
My love for you would remain, an eternal bliss." Sae read.
As he finished, he gazed at her, their eyes locking in a silent exchange. In those silent moments, the world faded away. A part of her sensed that this was his attempt at apology, a plea for forgiveness. Yet, another part of her wondered if she was reading too much into it.
"Oh, Itoshi. this was... I don't have words to say how heartwarming this was. I am in fact speechless at the moment. Is there something that caused you to write about this topic?" Miss Keiko asked.
"No, this was random," Sae replied with a bored expression on his face. "A+." The teacher replied as the students clapped.
It wasn't meant for her. How foolish she was to believe that the poem was intended for her or about her.
As lunch break arrived, (Y/n) eagerly sought out Rin and Haru, eager to share the events that had unfolded. "(Y/n)! Over here." Haru exclaimed as (Y/n) headed to where Rin and Haru were located.
"Okay, you guys—" "Did Sae do anything.. unusual today?" Haru asked, a smirk displayed on her features. "What? I was about to tell—what did you fucking do?" (Y/n) spoke.
"What? Me? I was just asking!" Haru batted her eyes all innocent-like. "Haru." (Y/n) stated firmly. "Okay, okay... I can't tell you, I promised. But, what I can tell you is that Sae realized that he was wrong. He wrote that poem for you. He regrets everything."
"Haru, you just told her everything," Rin stated. "Oh, well.. oh look Sae's coming this way! Whaaatt so surprising!" Haru replied. with a 'shocked' face.
(Y/n) looked behind her, noticing Sae's presence. "(Y/n). Can we.. talk?"
(Y/n) looked at her friends as they nodded for her to go.
The two headed outside the cafeteria, enveloped in silence as they walked through the empty hallways.
Sae stopped walking causing (Y/n) to stop as well as he turned to face her.
"Listen... I—"
"No, Itoshi. You listen to me." (Y/n) pointed, her voice firm. "I'm tired of you treating my feelings like they're some toy you can play with! I'm not a kid, I'm eighteen! You're either always staring at me or ignoring my presence, pick one and stick to it!"
"I know, I know.. I messed up, badly. I didn't mean to say all those things—" "That I'm a distraction? That Akari, my ex-best friend, was right?"
"(Y/n).." Sae started. "No, don't call me that." (Y/n) interrupted him for the umpteenth time.
"Can you just fucking listen to me for a second? Akari was wrong. You aren't a distraction, you are everything. I know I'm the cause of this, why do I know? Because I've been reliving that moment back during nationals every fucking day. You weren't the reason I missed the goal. It was my fault."
(Y/n) felt a rush of emotions flood through her as Sae's words sank in. Her heart, once racing with frustration and confusion, now seemed to pause, caught in a moment of disbelief. The weight of Sae's confession hung heavy in the air, stirring a whirlwind of conflicting feelings within her.
She struggled to process the sincerity in his voice, the vulnerability he displayed, and the implications of his words. It was as if time stood still, allowing her to absorb the depth of his confession and the complexity of her own emotions.
In that fleeting moment, she found herself teetering on the edge of understanding, unsure of how to respond, yet unable to ignore the stirring of hope within her.
"I know you won't forgive me for what I said or did, but just give me a chance. A chance to redeem myself to you." Sae spoke.
"So, what do you say.. let's take it one at a time this time. Friends?" He asked.
"Okay.." (Y/n) agreed after countless of thinking.
As Sae wrapped his arms around (Y/n), there was a tenderness in his touch, a gentle yet firm embrace that enveloped her. His warmth radiated through her, offering comfort and reassurance.
With each beat of her heart, she could feel the sincerity in his embrace, as if he were silently promising to never let go. It was a moment of connection, where words were unnecessary, and the language of their embrace spoke volumes of understanding, forgiveness, and the possibility of new beginnings.
"I missed you," Sae mumbled.
As (Y/n) opened her eyes, she noticed Rin and Haru cheering from a corner. She closed her eyes again, never wanting to let go.
