The day I met you was also the same day I considered the worst day of my life. It wasn't meeting you that ruined it, but the burden I had to carry in having to protect an entire country including all its inhabitants. My father, Mephiles, lay sick in bed, unable to face the war, leaving the responsibility on my shoulders as the only man in the house. The war had started some months ago, and they needed more soldiers, so they forced each family to risk one of their members. It normally had to be men, but women could go too, of course, it wasn't mandatory for them. It was a somewhat strong conflict between South and North Island, as both nations sought to take over the same territory; originally from South Island, due to the resources it held.
When I was about to leave my house , I had my hand shaking on the door handle of my house while my mother in the background was crying her eyes out. Anxiety was eating me alive and the desire for the earth to swallow me grew more and more. I was too young, too young to go to war, too young to die.
-I would love for you to have the opportunity to stay. My mother told me, trying to calm herself. After all, she was going to be left completely alone with the responsibility of caring for my sick father. -I'll be fine, everything will be fine. I responded, preventing my tears from coming out of my eyes, of course, I couldn't look at her, if I did, I would burst into tears.
With nothing more to say, I quickly turned around and headed towards the train station. It wasn't very far from home, so I arrived promptly. I placed my luggage next to me and sat in my respective seat. I spent the entire journey looking out the window, thinking about what awaited me at the camp. I wasn't ready, neither physically nor mentally, but it was my duty, and I had to do it regardless.
I couldn't understand how or why I had ended up in this situation, as if destiny wanted to destroy me inside and out, completely breaking me.
When I got off the train, I remember seeing a redhead waiting for me at the station, he was very tall and easily recognizable. -Shadow, right?- He said it with all the confidence in the world. I didn't feel like responding much at that moment, so I just nodded and we quickly left from there.
On the way, he tried to tell me a little about himself and what things were like when arriving at the camp. He told me his name was Knuckles and that he was one of the most important generals. He had entered the battlefield some years ago and had more than enough experience. He also told me about the restrictions that were in place and how my life was going to change from now on.
As we moved forward, I tried to focus on the general, although my mind was filled with thoughts that consumed me inside. I didn't want to seem rude, especially since I knew Knuckles was going to be one of the trainers.
Although I had been involved in street fights due to my quick irritability, facing enemies was not new to me. However, the use of firearms was completely unknown. I had never handled them before, as my experience was limited to knives and blades.
It was obvious that Knuckles had noticed how downedI was that day, but he didn't say anything, for which I was grateful.
After walking for a while, I was able to get to know the city a little. It turned out to be much more beautiful than it seemed in the pictures. Since I used to live in the south of South Island, coming to the capital always seemed complicated and distant to me.
We arrived at the camp after about twenty minutes of walking. The place was well maintained, but its age was noticeable.
Upon entering, I immediately noticed the bustling crowd filling the area, which made me anticipate that adapting would not be an easy task. Amidst all the conversations and movements, I could distinguish a particular person: you. You were talking animatedly with a shorter, blond boy, and what caught my attention was the beautiful smile that adorned your face at all times.
Instantly, our eyes met, and my heart began to beat strongly. I had never before witnessed such beautiful eyes as yours, of an incomparable emerald color. At that moment, an inexplicable sensation enveloped me, as if time stood still when I looked at you. However, this amazing emotion faded when Knuckles pulled me out of my thoughts to show me where I would sleep.
I followed Knuckles' steps, but I felt your gaze fixed on me, which didn't bother me, but somehow made me feel nervous, and at that moment, I didn't understand why. The red headed general led me to a room full of bunk beds, so I assumed I would sleep with many people.
After settling my things, I heard your voice behind me. I was lost in my thoughts, so I got startled and jumped a little. -Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you,- you said laughing.
It was the first time we exchanged words, and you turned that horrible day into one I will remember for the rest of my life.
I remember that day as if it were yesterday. We spent the night talking without being discovered, and that's when I discovered your name was Sonic The Hedgehog. You were very restless and talkative, you didn't stop talking for a second. We barely had time to sleep to face the next day.
