The second her professor dismissed the class at the end of the day, Rain sprang up from her chair and flung her things into the patch-and-pin decked backpack which lay at her sneakers just moments earlier. The clamour elicited the turning of numerous noggins, but the impatient athlete didn't care. She had places to be!
Her enthusiasm was soon to be intercepted by a wave of panic, however. Her fervent pace came to an electrified halt the second she realized she had forgotten to tell AJ that she was not in fact busy after class, which would have thenceforth confirmed their meetup (that is, if she had actually remembered and not thrown her phone beside her bed the night before...)
"Shit!!!" she cursed aloud and ripped the glowing brick from the bottomless-pit of a pocket that lined her baggy shorts.
No text.
Her cosmic hazel irises darted around, interrogating her surroundings like a lost puppy.
"Lookin' for someone Dashie?"
Rain's face flushed with heat and her stomach twisted in a knot as she turned to see AJ leaning casually against one of the navy metal beams that lined the corridor. The blonde examined her own stubby nails and selected one to take a nick at with her teeth, classic tomboy style. Her unreadable expression left Rain disquieted and eager.
Rainbow refused to be a victim to silence. "I don't have practice," she declared.
"Is that so?" AJ teased, finally lifting her charming fern gaze to lock eyes with Rain in a playful smirk. Her stupid cowboy hat shaded those eyes in an arcane spell, wrenching at Rain's soul like a fishing lour to a bass.
Ugh, this is so lame, what are we standing around for! Rain cavilled inwardly to herself, her nose scrunching as her soft rosewood lips peeled into a simper. Before AJ could protest, Rain lurched forward and knocked the buff-brown hat from her crown. She tore down the hallway howling, "Look's like someone else needs practice, 'yer slower than-uh headless chicken,'" she mocked the cowgirls accent terribly, but AJ loved it.
Rain didn't dare stop for a shoulder-check as she sprinted out through the entrance and onto the campus path. She didn't have time! While she wouldn't dare admit it aloud, she knew for a fact that AJ might be the only one with a chance at outrunning her. She had no clue why the farm-girl wouldn't join the soccer team herself--Heck, those long, brawny limbs threatened the shorter athlete's very primacy in the athletic hierarchy.
AJ rolled her eyes and scooped up her titfer, repositioning it modestly atop her cranium. She counted five seconds for the sake of Rain's pride, and then chuckled before starting after the annoyingly lovable dud.
"Watch where you're going!" an irritable bloke carped as Rain breezed by him, the wind from her hair dragging with it two or three of his papers. "Sorry!" Dash rasped half-insincerely without pause, erupting in another cheeky billow of laughter. "Sorry sir," AJ, apologized much more earnestly and picked up the sheets before handing them to the man and engaging in the hunt once more.
The air that filled Rain's lungs furthered the flutter in her chest, and her sneakers grew lighter with each step. There was nothing she loved more than being chased by AJ.
Just when she was ready to embrace her own victory, Rain slowed her pace to a jog, a smug look swiping across her mask. A rough 'THWACK' struck her from behind and she toppled onto the grass which skirted the sidewalk. Her head throbbed.
AJ pushed herself upward with sturdy forelimbs, her legs spread on either side of the smaller lass' hips. Rain's right wrist lay flopped inward at her chest about ten-inches below her chin, while the palm of her other hand pulled her bangs back to soothe her forehead.
