LUCY
My head is pounding, feeling as though someone has dropped an anvil on my head. My eyelids are so heavy that every time I try to open them, I simply can't. It's like my eyes have been superglued shut. It's such a weird sensation. My throat is so dry, feeling like a desert. I feel my hand get squeezed gently. Who is it?
"Lucy, I need you to pull through. Please. For me. For our babies." Tim's voice says softly. I feel his hand go to my belly. "Your mom and I love you both so much."
It takes everything in me to get my muscles to move, as they feel like they're being weighed down by a million pounds. I somehow manage to squeeze his hand. I hear him gasp. "Lucy?"
I try to grunt, try to make some sort of noise, but I can't. That fact upsets me deeply. I want nothing more than to tell him that I will be okay. That I am okay.
"Oh my God." I hear a shuffle and a beep. He must've hit the call button. A lot of noise follows as I hear the door open followed by the sounds of many footsteps entering the room. Several voices overlap and I feel as though something is being pulled out of my throat, allowing me to breathe when I hadn't even realized that I wasn't. Not on my own. Which explains why, aside from my very obvious lack of energy, I couldn't speak.
My chest rises and falls as I feel the strength slowly being returned to my body. I still feel weak, but for the first time in what feels like forever, I actually have energy. Granted, it's not much. But it's something, which is better than nothing.
"Okay, the tube is out and she appears to be breathing on her own. We'll leave for now and let you two have this moment. If you need any help or notice something off, don't hesitate to grab one of us immediately."
The door opens, I hear the sounds of footsteps shuffling out, and the door closes. His hand finds its way back into mine. I squeeze it and slowly blink my eyes open. The florescent lights are bright, and everything is blurry, but I am slowly able to see as things fade into view. The hospital room around me is shades of white and gray, with some hints of brown accents, such as the cabinets on the other side of the room.
Tim's face becomes clearer. He smiles at me, love and adoration evident in his eyes. "Baby? Can you hear me?"
I nod slightly, not being able to manage any more than that. He pulls in closer to me, stroking my hair gently and pressing a kiss to my forehead. I can hear him breathe out a sigh of relief. "You're doing so good, babe. You're so brave."
"T-Tim?" I croak, gazing up at him. He reaches for my hand and gives it a loving squeeze, never taking his eyes off me. I've always known that he loves me, but it's become so clear in this moment just how much he loves me.
"Yeah, love?"
"I- I- I want-"
"What do you want? Just tell me. Anything."
"I want crispy sweet corn with caramel drizzle and bleu cheese." I am suddenly feeling embarrassed by my odd cravings. A blush takes over my cheeks. "Please?"
His previously stoic expression is replaced by a grin as he starts laughing. "Of course. I can do that. Whatever you want, baby."
He stands up, placing a kiss on my lips before leaving the room. I sit alone, thinking. The reality of everything that has happened finally catching up to me. It almost distracts me from the weird concoction I'm somehow in the mood for. Almost. I'm still going to devour it.
Still, though, so much has happened, and I understand very little of it. Was someone trying to kill me? Why was Tim acting so weird before he left? Did this somehow have something to do with it? I gasp as realization dawns on me. "Whatever it was..." I pause. "It was all just a distraction."
