"I wave goodbye to the end of beginning"

HINATA WATCHED IN AMAZEMENT as you served another ball over, hitting the small water bottle that was placed on the other side of the court. "WOooooaaw!! You're so good at serving!" he exclaimed clapping his hands like a madman. He reached over to the ball cart next to him and tossed another ball at you so you could do it again.

You nodded at his compliment and caught the ball. Turning to face the net you saw Kageyama picking up the water bottle and moving it to another location. It had been a while since you started to practice again, you agreed to let them "practice" with you but it turned into a watch session. You learned that Kageyama had a killer jump serve but Hinata could barely get the ball over the net while standing. It made you curious as to what position he played where he didn't need to serve properly. You assumed he was a middle.

Your ball flew over the court hitting the water bottle and accidently bursting it open.

Looking over at Hinata you offered him an apology, "Sorry..." He was the one to suggest using a practice target and then offered up his water bottle. Inspecting his face, it seemed like he couldn't care less about the water bottle and he started to clap again. "What position do you play?" he asked.

"Ace," you responded watching Hinata drag the ball cart over. He took a ball out and tried replicating exactly what you had done previously only to have tossed the ball too far behind him and missed it completely. You winced at his actions, how did this guy make it onto the team?

"Are you a middle?" You questioned, and he confirmed your suspicion by nodding eagerly. "Am I bad?"

"Yes, you are." Kageyama snickered as he came over from under the net and tossed the busted water bottle at Hinata.

"I haven't seen you play. I wouldn't know" You shrugged trying to offer some support. "Middles usually don't need to serve well. That's what liberos are for."

As you said that Hinata looked like the color had been sucked out of him. He almost looked like a small puppy and a weird feeling boiled in your stomach. Your face wrinkled, was that the wrong thing to say?

"Your form is also weak. You look like a pile of sticks that crumble to the ground when you land. The toss was too high and you completely timed it off. It was a really shitty attempt." You offered him advice but it didn't seem to fix the situation.

Kageyama just bursted out laughing at how depressed Hinata looked. The orange-headed boy flopped to the ground muttering about how he wasn't built for this and how he would never go pro or live up to his dreams. He was practically melting into the floor.
