YOU CAN'T HANDLE IT ANYMORE. His gaze, the presence of his eyes on your back is driving you wild. It's more attentive than you thought it would be, than you'd like it to be, and not in the usual way a coach scrutinizes a player. It's different.
Every serve, every dive, every set that you make feels like it's under a microscope. You're being analyzed and cataloged in a sense that's almost unnerving. The gym's high ceilings do nothing to alleviate the sense of being exposed, sweat trickles down your back and you're not sure if it's from the workout or the intensity of his gaze.
Each time you hit the ball back over the net, you can feel his eyes–sharp, calculating– assessing every aspect of your technique.
There's a weird jittering feeling swirling around in your stomach, threatening to break your concentration as the volleyball leaves your hands in the form of a set. The ball spins a bit due to the unevenness of its launch and of course, he notices that too.
"Stop freaking out," Sakusa says, catching the ball you set for him instead of attacking it like he was supposed to. He stares at you like he's been doing this entire time with a weird glint in his eyes. Easy for him to say, he's not the one being glared down.
"You're doing great," he adds, voice calm as he tosses the ball back to you and tells you to go again. His words are meant to reassure, but they do anything but that. It's not Sakusa's fault, you've been tense since the mentions of Spring Interhigh Qualifiers and the fact that it's tomorrow makes you feel even more sick.
You should have listened when he asked if you wanted to take a break because now you're nothing but a mess of sweaty palms and jittering nerves that are bursting around like a rocket that's about to explode.
Sakusa moves back into his previous position and you toss the ball at him again and the two of you fall into a familiar routine. You spike at him, he passes it back to you and you set it for him. He had taken you up on your offer to set for him– not really, Komori slept in today meaning it was only the two of you in the gym practicing together.
You keep the pace up, matching Sakua's speed effortlessly. The setting is nice, but only when you're not in the game. This is claiming, setting to Sakusa with no other worries than to give him the best tosses you possibly can. He tells you when your sets are bad with no remorse, demanding that you fix them and do better.
The drill goes on for a little longer when he stops you, without warning, catching the ball and heading in your direction. You give him a look of confusion, hands dropping to your sides since there is no need for them to be up anymore.
