YOU STAND INFRONT OF THE gym doors, early in the morning waiting. There are sounds of talk inside followed by obnoxious laughter and a shriek.
The heat of the morning blazes down on you but your feet don't move or make an attempt to open the doors. You stand as still as a tree, unmoving as if you've been planted there for years now.
The strap of your volleyball bag feels worn out under your touch. You're gripping it so hard right now that your knuckles are turning white. The air is thick with anticipation, a weight pressing down on your chest.
You are here, hesitating, your mind a whirlwind of excitement and dread.
Sakusa and Komori are on the other side, warming up, and playing, you have no idea, but the thought of it makes you nervous again.
The concrete beneath your sneakers feels warmer with each passing second, almost as if it's urging you to make a decision. When the game ended last time, you were sure of yourself you'd never feel that same spark that you did when you had practiced with them– and you were right.
It didn't come when playing with your team, didn't come when practicing alone, and wasn't there when you played with anyone else.
So now you're back,
Fuck it, what's the worse that could happen?
Just as you're about to push the door open, it swings wide, and your heart beats faster. Standing in the doorway is Sakusa, who looks confused as he stares down at you.
He stands tall in front of you, almost the same size as the doorframe, beads of sweat glisten on his forehead, making him look effortlessly attractive. For a moment, you're caught off guard, lost in the way his presence fills the space between you.
He looks you up and down, his eyes running over your face and down your body. "Are you okay?" he asks, his voice calm but direct, slicing through your nervous thoughts.
You nod, your throat suddenly dry. "I was just about to come in," you manage, voice softer than intended.
Sakusa purses his lips before the corners tug up, barely noticeable unless you're looking closely– something you're definitely not doing. "Good, it's been boring without you," he says with a blunt tone. "I really wanted to play with you again."
His words are straightforward, but the underlying compliment sends a rush of warmth through you. Sakusa holds the door open, making way for you to step inside. As you walk past him, he closes the door behind you.
"So you missed me?" you glance back at him, the hint of a teasing smile playing on your lips. You don't know why but every time you're around him, you get some sort of confidence boost. You've never been one to tease anybody else before – or anything of the sort, but it seems to slip out around Sakusa.
