"Is she crying?"
"I think I saw her cheeks wet."
"Or maybe tears falling from her eyes."
My mind reverberated within the walls of my skull as James' voice and words continued to repeat themselves while I scurried around every corner, corridor, and room on the floor where I last saw Rachel leave.
All I could see was the plain hurt that flashed in her gaze as I said those things to her, the pain visible on her face when she told me to leave, the little crack in her voice, which she tried to hide as she snapped at me, and the moisture welling within her orbs when she glared—all of it made its way into my vision vividly every time I blinked.
It jabbed inside my chest, creating an odd, tortuous pain that I had never experienced before.
I've lost track of how many times I've bumped into people walking around me and apologized for doing so. My aim was to find her, talk to her, let her get angry at me, or even hit me with whatever she wanted—anything to make her feel less hurt. Even after exploring the same place twice, I was met with nothing but more worry.
When I eventually came to a stop near her cabin, I exhaled deeply to catch my breath, but the buzzing in my ears made it difficult for me to relax. She was hurt, and it was because of me. Her phone number remains on my phone, and she is only a phone call away, but knowing her, if I send her a text, she will block me immediately.
That's the last thing I want right now.
I knew she and her family did not get along well. She had only allowed me into her personal life once before, and I had unknowingly misused her vulnerability today to provoke her.
"Don't think that you have any say in my personal life, Nicolas, only because I have allowed you once."
I. Am. A dick!
Come on, Feisty, where are you?!
"Okay. Let's think about it." I pushed back the racing thoughts in my head to get a clear picture of this moment while talking to myself. "She works at her dad's hospital and isn't in her cabin right now, attending to her patients." I think harder. "Maybe she went to her father's cabin?"
"Nicolas?" Stacy's voice darts my attention at her. "What are you doing here?"
"Stacy..." I make possible excuses in my head to say to her for my presence here right now. "I just came here with James."
"But he left already, didn't he?" She inquired.
I hate this day. "Uh... yeah..." I cleared my throat. "What are you doing here?"
