There was a time where I had been a cocky bastard in the past, when I had invited myself to be announced in Jade's house while him and his therapist, Aurora (who is currently his wife), were having a moment, and I had been so irritating for Jade for a few days about it, never missing any chance to be near Aurora only to work him up or to tease him by her name as I wished. I won't say I felt bad; I had enjoyed myself too much to even admit it while I was at it.

But I won't say the same for the situation I am presently in.

If Karma existed, this was me taking my own medicine, and I must admit that it tasted absolutely horrible.

I was still in the middle of processing the things I'd said to Rachel in a moment of weakness, where I never wanted her or anyone to see this side of me—so broken and miserable that I had shut everyone out, even my parents—when Jade appeared on the front door of my room, eyeing me like a cop who had caught me in the middle of a heist after checking with the other two guests of mine—James and Stacy—for me.

Rachel had fled back into her cabin without saying anything when he arrived, which only contributed to his unpleasant to the eyes smugness, which had appeared the instant Rachel vanished and had never left his face since.

"Trust me, it's so much fun when the tables turn, my friend." Jade gloats, hands behind his head, as he lays down on my bed as if he owns it, before his gaze returns to me from the ceiling. "And yeah, Karma is a nasty bitch. I am flattered to see that you allowed her to stay in the cabin that was originally designed for you."

I sat across the bed on a chair while facing him. "I told you." My glare intensified. "We were just talking, and I let her stay in my cabin because that was the only one with a proper locking system."

"All protective for a girl you claim to dislike." He offers me an imitating expression. "Remember when I'd said the same thing in the past about 'just talking'?" He shook his head and rolled his eyes. "At least I had been wearing my clothes when you barged in."

He dodges the empty can of beer which I throw at him and laughs like a maniac.

"But, seriously, Nick." His gaze changed to a severe glare at me. "What is going on between you two here?"

The interrogative tone of his made me scrunch my nose. "What do you mean, what is going on?" I argued. "I told you there was nothing going on between me and her, and why are you being such a buzzkill? Just because she's Aurora's best friend?"

"Well, it's bad to be a buzzkill." He scoffs. "But yes, she's my wife's best friend, and there's nothing that they both don't share with each other. So if one day Rachel decides to tell my wife about all this, she wouldn't skip to mention my name, as I saw you both, and my Ocean might need answers from me." A scowl appears in his gaze. "And to give my wife the answers she wants, I need my answers from you right now."
