"And the promotion this quarter will be going to....Finn Carter congratulations" the office began to clap watching the shocked expression cover Finn's face he only started working at the accounting firm two months ago. Nathan has been working here for much longer then him but he was never offered a raise or a promotion. He came here right after college with his best friend Robert he was already 25 it's not like he was getting any younger. He thought while slowly clapping along wondering when his chance would come to get higher in the firm? Though he was clapping along with everyone else he couldn't help but glare at Finn's back as he was making his way to the front of the crowd shaking their bosses hand. Nathan's friend Robert pat his arm grabbed his attention "Stare any harder and he'll catch on fire" he whispered making Nathan roll his eyes he's hands fall to his sides. Their old boss Mr. Jennings smiles at Finn patting his back looking like a proud father "Your what everyone here should inspire to be. Your only 20 and already being promoted you may be running this place one day son. Come to my office so we can discuss your pay raise. Everyone else back to work" the crowd starts to disperse back to their desks. Nathan drags his feet as he falls back into his chair wondering when he was going to get a option of a raise. Robert sits at his own deck watching his friend let out a heavy sigh "You ok buddy? Cuz you look like shit not gonna lie" Robert boots up his computer waiting for Nathan's response. He picks up his pen clicking it aimlessly "When the hell is he going to give me a raise. I've been working for him for 6 years and still nothing. I'm starting to feel stagnant here Robert. What am I doing wrong here?" he questioned sitting down his pen before booting up his computer. Robert types on his computer before writing down a few notes "Your a push over Nat you let him and everyone else walk all over you. If you want a raise or a different position go in there at the end of your shift and talk to him about it" the way Robert said it made it sound so easy but he knew it wouldn't be that simple surely. Nathan didn't consider himself a pushover he would say he was...um agreeable and accepting to other people's ideas and opinions. Maybe Robert was right maybe all he had to do is ask and he could get his raise. He really wanted to work his way up the ladder lately he's been feeling numb when it came to working. Or...maybe just numb in general like he was just going through the motions of life. It wasn't the best feeling and he wanted to change it. Maybe a promotion was just what he needed to pull himself out his slump. Soon the end of shift rolled around quicker then expected everyone was starting to clear out packing their briefcases, laptops and folders. Robert leans back in his chair watching Nathan stand looking towards the bosses office "Yah gonna go talk to him?" Nathan nods rubbing his sweaty hands down his suit blazer. Robert nods putting some paperwork in his briefcase "I'll wait here for you I want to see how it goes" he said twisting one of his dreads. Nathan swallowed walked to Mr. Jennings the door was cracked so he walked inside "Did I say you could come in Thompson?" he studded to come up with a excuse not meeting his eyes. He was sat at his desk typing on his computer "I...I'm s..so..sorry sir I saw..th..the door open an..." Mr. Jennings laughs leaning back watching him shake in place. Nathan didn't no what else to say so he shut his mouth looking down "I'm just playing around kid just tell me what you want already" he licked his lips looking at Mr. Jennings "Sir when will I be able to move up in the company maybe a possible raise I've been here for 6 years" he said in disbelief of his own word. Most people would have probably quit by now but he was so used to working here he didn't want to leave Mr. Jennings hums. He scratches the top of his bald head before folding his hands on top of his desk "Your aware Finn just got a raise we can only have one raise per quarter. And though you have been working here for along time. I don't feel as if you've done anything remarkable to get a raise" he shrugs with a small arrogant smile leaving Nathan fuming inside. So he was trying to tell him out of the whole 6 years he's been here he's done nothing important but fucking Finn somehow has?! That was ridiculous he pressed his lips tight in frustration "But hey, we can revisit this conversation next quarter and see about that raise. Just work alittle harder around here and who knows maybe you'll be next" Mr. Jennings smiles turning back to his computer typing away as if to dismiss Nathan completely. He wanted to say something to defend himself but his mouth seemed glued shut. He simply turned leaving the office closing the door behind him softly he walked back to his desk picking up his briefcase. Robert watched him closely while standing up "Nothing huh?" Nathan nods as the make their way to the elevator. Nathan press the bottom floor and they stand side by side and wait for the doors to open "Well at least you tried but guess what I did to make you feel better?" the doors slide open and they walk inside with it closing behind them. Nathan looks at him out the side of his eye curiously "You have a date tomorrow at 7pm at Brasserie Du Soleil and it's all on me put it on my tab and just have fun for once" he said with a big smile but Nathan looked mortified. He didn't want to go on any dates why couldn't he just stay home with his cat Snowball and a few good books to get his mind off reality "Dude I don't want to go on any blind dates. You know I'm not the social butterfly you are" the elevator doors open again to the lobby and they make their way to the door. Robert waves at the young blonde at the front desk she gives him a flirtatious smile "Your always talking about how you wish you could open up...here's your chance! her names Ivy brown pixie hair very curvy perfect to crack your shell" the step outside in the cold night air walking towards their cars. Nathan rolled his eyes he had no idea how him and a guy like Robert became best friends they are complete opposites. Robert was outgoing, social and a absolute man slut would honestly sleep with any woman on two legs. Nathan on the other hand was quiet, shy and lacked any real social skills which is why he had a cat named Snowball to check he's social box. They where roommates in college and that's how it all started honestly Nathan was happy to have someone like Robert in his life. He didn't have any brothers or sisters so Robert was the closest he had to a brother. And luckily he had Robert to bring him out from time to time to socialize for dinner or a beer though Nathan wasn't much of a drinker. He opened his car door looking back as Robert does the same "Fine...Fine I'll go but for real no more blind date's" Robert nods with a small smile climbing into his car sending him a wave before heading down the road. Nathan lets out a huff and climbs into his Handa heading towards his house to Snowball and his own peace.
