SANYU DECIDED TO TAKE the next day off.
After what had happened the night before, she knew she needed time to herself. She explained to Lin that she wanted to start meditating again, hoping to regain some peace and focus. Lin, ever understanding, supported her without hesitation, assuring her she could take all the time she needed.
Though Sanyu claimed she wouldn't need much time, deep down, she longed to escape. She wished she could vanish, leave everything behind, and never look back. Her mother loved and supported her, yet her own fears and doubts often kept her from truly healing.
It was an ongoing struggle, one that deepened whenever she thought about how close she had come to dying at just six years old. She had been given a second chance at life, and she was determined not to mess it up──but sometimes, it felt impossible.
The darkness of her past still haunted her. The pain swallowed her whole, trapping her in a place where she couldn't escape. She often wondered if mastering airbending would even be possible for her, or if she would always be stuck in the shadows of her past, unable to embrace the gift she'd had since birth.
Meditating turned out to be harder than she remembered. She spent her day off trying to recapture a sense of peace, but it seemed like her mind was more distracted than ever.
From her perch on the mansion's rooftop, she noticed Councilman Tarrlok arriving at Air Temple Island. He looked like he was in a hurry, possibly for an urgent meeting with Tenzin. Sanyu observed from above, curious. Tarrlok hadn't seen her, but she couldn't help wondering why he'd chosen to meet here instead of City Hall with the other council members.
She tried to return to her meditation, but focusing felt like battling a storm. Her worries and anxieties kept cluttering her mind. But Sanyu knew she had to keep going. She took a deep breath, slowly releasing the tension in her body. With every exhale, she tried to let go of the weight pressing down on her heart. It wasn't easy, but little by little, she began to feel the chaos inside her start to ease.
After what felt like an eternity, she reached a rare moment of calm. She felt lighter.
She lost track of time while meditating, completely absorbed in the tranquility she had worked so hard to find. But then, a voice broke through her focus, a single phrase rang in her mind: "Gorgeous woman." The words were like a needle, pricking at her calm and turning it into irritation. She tried to block it out, but the voice grew louder, more insistent with every second.
