Wen Ai and Yue Xiao weren't in the same interest class, yet their class times coincided. Every time, Grandma Wang had to watch the two little fellows walk into the youth palace before she could take a leisurely stroll nearby and come back to pick them up when it was time.
Yue Xiao's painting class ended early today. He climbed up to the third floor, carrying a bag of paints and brushes.
In the dance studio, the dance teacher had just finished demonstrating the Latin dance moves for the kids and started playing rhythmic drumbeat music for them to practice for five minutes.
Wen Ai stood at the end of the first row, and as Yue Xiao approached the door, he saw Wen Ai and Miao Miao facing each other, holding hands, twisting their waists, and swaying their hips. Before taking a few steps, the two of them even embraced.
Unconsciously, Yue Xiao tightened his grip on the door frame, causing flecks of olive green paint to fall off.
After class, Wen Ai walked out with Miao Miao, sweating profusely, and didn't even say hello when he saw Yue Xiao. He walked downstairs by himself.
Yue Xiao caught up with him and took out a handkerchief, offering it to him. "Here, wipe yourself."
Wen Ai glanced down, then turned his head and continued chatting with Miao Miao.
In the evening, Dad An took Wen Ai into the bathroom for a bath, while Yue Xiao ran to the balcony and told Mom An that he also wanted to learn ballroom dancing.
"Why do you suddenly want to learn dancing?" Mom An was hanging clothes, shaking out a shirt twisted into a ball and hanging it on a hanger. "I heard the teacher say you have a talent for painting. Maybe you could pursue that."
"Today I saw my little brother in class from outside the classroom, and he danced really well. I want to learn too." Yue Xiao took out two clips from the cardboard box on the stool and handed them to Mom An. "I'll practice painting diligently on my own."
"You're so good, helping me out." Mom An patted Yue Xiao's head, took the clips, and clipped them onto the shirt's shoulder line. "If you want to learn, go ahead. Tomorrow I'll talk to the teacher at the cultural center."
"Thank you, Mom!" Yue Xiao smiled, "I appreciate it!"
Yue Xiao looked grateful, almost bowing down, making Mom An feel that this child was really considerate, but a bit too formal.
She bent down and kissed Yue Xiao's cheek, smiling. "It's okay, don't be so polite with Mom."
"Okay..." Yue Xiao awkwardly touched his face.
The ballroom dance class was originally set for an even number of students, practicing in pairs. When Wen Ai, the unexpected transfer student, joined, the teacher added him to Miao Miao's group. The three children took turns as partners, but Miao Miao and Wen Ai were so close that they often forgot about the other chubby boy, who felt neglected and once sat on the ground crying.
Now, with Yue Xiao's arrival, the teacher paired him with Wen Ai. The chubby boy held Miao Miao's hand, smiling so much that his eyes disappeared into his chubby cheeks.
"Shall we start?" Yue Xiao stood nervously in front of Wen Ai. "Do you want to lead male or female steps?"
Wen Ai glared at him. "Of course it's the male steps!"
Yue Xiao nodded. "Okay, I'll follow your lead."
The cassette recorder in the front of the dance studio played lively music, but Wen Ai looked displeased, clearly not expecting him to take the initiative. Yue Xiao wiped his hand on his pants and slowly reached out, carefully taking Wen Ai's hand.
